Sterling was a lovely lady and a dear friend. I will always remember her softspoken manner and best of all her great laugh. She loved her children more than anything. I will truly miss her and recall the good times we shared with fondness.

In 1976 I did not know Sterling as well as her "little" brother Frank at RJR (76) but was accustomed to seeing her on campus. Sterling went to UNCG where I followed 2 years later. After that I lost touch with her until I moved to Stanaford Rd in 1993. GUESS WHO was my new next-next door neighbor!?! Sterling was my BEST friend in the neighborhood. We had so much fun reconnecting as adults. Funny - or - fate that our collective children Sarah, Katie, John and Ted became fast and close VERY BEST friends. Sarah, John, Katie and Ted literally lived half at Sterling's house and half at ours. When I gave Katie the sad news last week she told me that she always thought of Sterling as her second mom. She was a great mother and a dear friend. When she moved to FL I missed her so much and thought of her often. My deepest condolences to her whole family: Anna and especially my "other" children, Sarah and John. May you all be comforted by knowing that Sterling is now truly at peace. She has joyfully reunited with her beloved brother Frank and her parents. Her sweet spirit and lilting laughter will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. She touched my life as only the closest to her can understand. - Laura Bess Ayers RJR 76

It's so hard to lose someone you've known since childhood. I saw Sterling rarely over the past few years but when I did, she always greeted me with her gentle smile and warm personality. She will be missed.
