MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Felix Gladstone Doggett, 93, of 331 Grace St., Mt. Airy, husband of Allene Emily Loy Doggett, passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Doggett was born near Browns Summit in Guilford County on Nov. 17, 1908, the son of the late Wesley O. and Sallie Anderson Doggett. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Mr. Doggett was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in civil engineering. He worked one year for the city of Charlotte in the water and sewer department prior to graduation and five years there after graduation. In 1943 he received a personal commendation from the Surgeon General of the United States for special assistance to the Army Medical Corps, which was conducting research on diseases of the Pacific Theater on 150 conscientious objectors at Pinehurst. He occasionally made visits to Mount Airy to render assistance when special problems arose. This led to his return in May 1947 as City Engineer and Director of Public Works. He continued with the city until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1972. The last ten years he served as City Manager. Mr. Doggett was also a member of Granite Masonic Lodge 322 AF & AM for more than 60 years. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Terry Matthews. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. October 6, 2002

Mr. Felix Doggett, my grandfather's baby brother, will always be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him. He was born in 1908, and became for our family, a wonderful raconteur of stories about his childhood and the Doggetts of Brown Summit.

Growing up in Rural North Carolina in the first quarter of the last century, he saw many changes in his lifetime and was able to precisely remember every detail in the stories he told. Uncle Felix will be missed greatly by us all. I thank God for the opportunity to have learned from Felix about where I came from....
