Glenn Collins Obituary

COLLINS Glenn Lee Collins, 81, went to the more immediate presence of the Savior on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008. He was the first child born to Tom G. and Bertha America Collins on Oct. 29, 1926, in Surry County. "Pop" was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and a committed church member, a lover of music and travel, a loyal employee, a veteran of World War II and a wonderful friend. Pop was a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church, where he delighted in playing in the church band. He and his trumpet were part of the Easter Sunrise Services in Old Salem for more than 50 years. Chauffeuring his wife and grandchildren around the country with his Airstream in tow was his special joy. Glenn retired with 40 years of service as a maintenance machinist with AT&T (Western Electric.) He served his country as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Navy attached to the 6th Marine Division in Japan. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene "Tink" McGee Collins of the home, sons Garry and fiancee Nancy Jackson and Dan and wife Jan; grandchildren Casey and wife Ashley and Evan Collins; brothers Aubrey and wife Imogene and Alfred and wife Jean; sisters Gladys Harris and Joyce Foy; and Betsy Burkleo, mother of his grandchildren. Additional survivors include stepgrandchildren David and Amanda Burns, Brendan Davis and Dylan Davis; great-grandchildren Isaac Burns and Jadyn Davis; and longtime friend Evelyn Sellars. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 29, at Fries Memorial Moravian Church. Interment will follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard. Memorials may be made to Sunnyside Ministry of the Moravian Church, 319 Haled St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127, or Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 Hawthorne Road N.W., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
