Grace Jones Obituary

JONES WINSTON-SALEM Grace Jones Jones August 24, 1924 - Jan. 5, 2013 Grace Jones Jones, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. Grace was born August 24, 1924 in Forsyth County to William and Anna Smith Jones. Grace grew up near Lewisville, the eleventh of twelve children in a loving family with a strong faith and a strong sense of the importance of family. She was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church for more than 60 years and spent her childhood years at Concord United Methodist where she will be buried. Grace's fashion sense was well known and appreciated by friends, family and customers at Davis Department Store from which she retired after more than 20 years of service. Grace chose the perfect dress and the perfect accessories for every occasion. Grace married Wallace W. Jones on October 1, 1949 and was preceded in death by her husband in 2000, by her parents, eight of her brothers and sisters, Paul Jones, Monroe Jones, Griffith Jones, Gladys Sink, Alvis Jones, Virgil Jones, Susan Hughes and Margaret Harper and by a sister-in-law, Billie Erickson. Grace is survived by daughter Lynda Jones Swaim and granddaughter Erin Lee Smith and Erin's husband Thomas. She is survived by a sister, Lucile Hill, brothers Bill Jones and wife Dot, Phillip Jones and wife Wilma; sisters-in-law Mamie Jones, Ann Baysinger, Beverly Johnson and Betty Strader. Grace is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, several of whom will always call their great great aunt "Amazing Grace." With her immediate family and her large extended family, Grace showed her deep love and pleasure in being family, and she shared an abiding pleasure in visiting and being visited by those she loved. She was a classy lady with a wonderful heart. Grace enjoyed her walks in the neighborhood and was grateful to have such generous and caring neighbors who became another facet of family for her. She enjoyed traveling whether on cruises, roadtrips to the beach with her sisters, nieces and daughter or drives to the Virginia mountains for stayman apples. She loved sharing her once-a-month breakfasts with former Davis coworkers and kept up with the activities of friends and customers. Grace enjoyed reading and a good discussion of ideas, and she passed on her upbeat perspective to all who visited with her. Grace's family offers special thanks to the second floor ICU staff and palliative care at Forsyth Medical Center for care and comfort given to Grace. A graveside service and burial will be held at noon on Wednesday, January 9 at Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville with Rev. Kathie Sherrill officiating. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall following the service. Memorials may be made to Burkhead United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or to Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 8955 Concord Church Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023.
