Herbert Vogler Obituary

VOGLER Mr. Herbert Alexander Vogler Jr., 83, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Vogler was born Jan. 25, 1925, to Herbert A Vogler Sr. and Louise Henley Vogler and was a resident in Old Salem until his marriage to Frances Miller Sowers on Dec. 5, 1953. Mr. Vogler lived in a house across the street from the house his great-great-grandfather, John Vogler, built. He attended Miss Lillian Dalton' s School on Summit Street, Wiley School, and graduated from Reynolds High School. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1950. He was a past president and a life member of the N.C. Adjusters Association and the founder of Vogler Adjusters. He was a board member of the Philip Christopher Vogler Foundation and a member of Old Town Club. He served three years in World War II in the 311th Medical Corps of the 86th Blackhawk Division in both Europe and the Philippines. Mr. Vogler played in the Home Moravian Church band for 50 years. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Frances, and three children, Herbert Alexander Vogler III and wife Nancy of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Ellen Vogler Rogers and husband William "Buck" Benjamin Rogers Jr. of Winston-Salem; and Christine Vogler Riddle and husband Danny of Advance. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Herbert Alexander Vogler IV, Nikolai Samuel Vogler, William Benjamin Rogers III and Christina Carol Rogers. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Home Moravian Church, with the Rev. Scott Venable, Dr. Gerald Harris and the Rev. Christine Clore officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. There will be a private burial. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor' s choice; Home Moravian Church Band, Southern Province of the Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; the Dalton Folwell Memorial Fund of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157; or Old Salem Inc., P.O. Box F, Salem Station, Winston-Salem, NC 27108. Salem Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.salemfh.com.

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of this descendant (through his maternal grandmother's mother) of the Martin family of Ayersville in Rockingham County. I had a very enjoyable telephone conversation with him several years ago. May God grant his family and friends peace and comfort in this time of sorrow.
