James Fox Obituary

Fox, James "Jim" Robert

September 13, 1946 - August 15, 2021

James Robert Fox died August 15, 2021 at Forsyth Hospital following an acute illness.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Floyd and Mae Fox, a brother, Dennis Fox, and a sister, Deborah Fox Holder. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Lewis Fox, of the home, his two daughters, and his brother, Olin Fox of Charleston, SC.

Jim graduated from Taylorsville High School, then Duke University (undergraduate and law school). His work history included law practice as partner at Howrey and Simon in Washington DC and partner at Bell Davis and Pitt in Winston-Salem, NC. He also served a few years as legal counsel for Pike Electric in Mt. Airy, NC.

A great joy and privilege for Jim was his association with the NC State Bar. He made cherished friendships across the state as an elected councilor from the 31st Judicial District, chaired State Bar committees, and ultimately served as President of the NC State Bar. Jim was involved in many other legal and civic organizations, ranging from membership in The American College of Trial Lawyers to alumnus of Leadership Winston-Salem.

Jim was especially proud to work with the exemplary lawyers and staff at Bell, Davis and Pitt. He was blessed with good friends, near and far (shout out to the Midtown Cafe breakfast group). He also valued his small group relationships in Winston-Salem, including the volunteer docents at Reynolda House, Downtown Rotary, Prayer Breakfast at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and his Great Books book club. In retirement he had time to pursue his artistic side — painting, wood carving and building furniture.

But, mostly, he loved his family—and did they ever love him! He was a sweet and supportive father, and his two daughters were his absolute delights (his dog, Oscar, a close second). Jim was a kind, wise and interesting husband. He and his wife enjoyed travel, Broadway, and hiking in the mountains, as well as simple nights by the fire reading books together.

Jim Fox—you will be missed!

Due to the COVID resurgence, there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bookmarks, GreenNest, or the donor's choice.

It took a few minutes, after I read that Jim had passed, to realize it was my friend, Jim. This came as a shock to me, and I can say that his passing is a real loss for all who knew him. I knew him through his association as a docent at Reynolda House. What a person to remember just based on his involvement there. I found him to be an inspiration! Rest in peace in God's arms, Jim!

Debbie and girls, your Dad and your best friend will be missed. He grew his own personal talents and delighted in observing and encouraging the talents in each of you blossom and flourish. You are a family that deeply loves one another. Cry when it helps, enjoy the laughter and smiles that come with your remembering. Jim's love for you is right there with you when the tears come. His loving smile is ever present as he delights in your safe keeping, shared loved for one another, ongoing accomplishments and your laughter. Thanks be to God for the blessings of each of you.

A fine gentleman and exemplary of professionalism. To the family you have my sincere condolences. Attorney Fox´s efforts in assisting Forsyth County to procure a new courthouse is most appreciated.
