Joe Davis Obituary

Joe Spencer Davis

Jul 29, 1926 - Sep 16, 2024

Joe Spencer Davis of Pfafftown passed away on September 16, 2024 at the age of 98. He was born on July 29, 1926 to Noah Boone Davis and Ida Willard Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents and his seven siblings, Jeff, Charlie, Omia, Ruth, Carl and two infant siblings. Also preceding him in death were his wives, Ruby Whicker Davis and Helen Coe Davis. He was a lifelong member of the Moravian church, spending his early years at Bethesda Moravian and joining Olivet Moravian in 1969. He enjoyed serving in many capacities at both churches including serving on both church boards, choir member, coffee carrier, Men's Fellowship, hosting chicken stews, working with the church sponsored barbeques and even a group he created called The Misfits that helped take care of the church property and helping fellow church members in need. Among his favorite things to do was taking care of the church grounds as well as going to Laurel Ridge to cut wood for the church camp. Joe spent 37 years working in the meat departments at Grandview and Mt. Tabor Food Markets spending the last 34 as manager of both. He was also a dedicated member of the Vienna Civic Club for many years. He never met a stranger and had friends of all ages. He was known for making children laugh by throwing ice, making faces at them and marking a red X on their hands and calling them love marks. He developed numerous friendships that lasted many years through his outgoing personality. He was so well known in the community that some even referred to him as the "Mayor of Pfafftown".

He loved family more than anything. Left to cherish many memories are Sherry Caudle and husband Ken, Janet McSwain; grandchildren, Lauren McSwain Mattox (Jonathan), Ashlan McSwain Drake (Josh), Josh Caudle, Roger Caudle; and great-grandson, Samuel Mattox; great-granddaughter, Karlee Caudle; sisters-in-law, Shelby Coe and Phyllis Miller; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend thanks to the owners and staff at Vienna Village Assisted Living for the outstanding care given.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Olivet Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. Pastor Matthew Allen will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the reception hall. Masking is encouraged.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Ch. Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or to the charity of your choice. Send condolences online at www.salemfh.com.

Joe was a great friend, always smiling and having something funny to report be it at the meat counter or church. We need more Joe´s.
