Joseph Bonello Obituary

Mr. Joseph Bonello passed away Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 9, 1925, on the island of Malta. Mr. Bonello served in World War II in Malta with the Royal Air Force and received the St. George Cross for his service. Joe came to the United States in 1949 and settled in the New York City area. He returned to his homeland for a bride in 1957 and came back with Jane. Joe and Jane had four children. They were married for 25 years and divorced but, within time, became friends. He worked as a building superintendent in Manhattan before retiring in 1990. He then moved to Florida, where he enjoyed fishing and the sun. In March 2005, he moved to Winston-Salem. He attended the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center. Mr. Bonello is survived by a brother, John Bonello and his wife, Dolores; a sister, Rose Briffa and her husband, Charlie; daughters, Theresa and Mark Powers, Phyllis and Peter Coconis and Karen Desarno; and his only son, James and Younghee Bonello. He leaves behind six grandchildren, Vincent, Kristen, Steven, Deanna, James Young and Andy. Joe loved the New York Yankees and listening to music of the big bands and Al Jolson. He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed. We look forward to seeing him again in the resurrection. All his children's sentiments are as an old popular song that goes, "O my Papa, to me he was so wonderful, to me he was so good." A 10 a.m. funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, May 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Father Michael Buttner officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to tonight, May 15, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

It's hard for me to express the joy and sorrows of our life together as two close brothers, there so musch to say.

As a two young boys growing up in Malta he was always the good and quite Joe or better known as Gus (sound jew) and I was always the devil so to speak. He always was there for me to cover up when I misbehaved to save me a wacking from our beloved mother. He helped me settle down on my arrival in America, and we always stayed close helping one another to the best of our ability.

My wife Dolores And I missed him alot but deep in my heart I feel that God loved him by taking him away from us so soon to spare him all the hardship that comes with that dreadful Alzheimer disease.

Guz rest in peace, we'll be praying for you and hope to meet again in the near future.

With a broken heart I say goodbye my dear brotherand rest in peace which you so richly deserve.

Your loving brother John And wife Dolores

It was with great sadness when I received the news of the passing of Uncle Joe. I will forever cherish the memories of the loving, peaceful, relaxed person that I have known him to be. I am so thankful that the last joyful memory I will have of him was at my Mom and Dad’s 50th Anniversary party. God bless you Uncle Joe and rest in peace.

He reminded us of our Dad, Charlie Sammut; unassuming and always happy to be with family. I can't tell you how grateful we were to see Joe and his children at John and Dolores' anniversary party. God Bless you and keep you safe.

We were so sorry to hear of the sad news about Uncle Joe. We have a very special memory of him many years ago feeding the birds by the water while we were visiting him in Florida. It seemed like the little things in life made him happy. That's how we will remember him.
