Mark Adams Obituary

ADAMS EAST BEND - Mark Adams Oct. 13, 1916 - Jan. 23, 2012 Mr. Mark Adams, 95 years old, died peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2012. Mr. Adams was born October 13, 1916, to Nathan and Etta Jane Collins Adams. He always felt that being born on Friday the thirteenth was good luck for him. He spent most of his life in the North Deep Creek Community of Yadkin County. He graduated from Boonville High School and Draughn's Business College in Winston Salem. Mr. Adams served in the National Guard from 1939-1941. He worked for Goodyear in Akron, Ohio, building Corsair planes during WWII. He and his wife returned to Winston Salem in 1946, where he went to work for Montgomery Ward and later Piedmont Airlines. He retired from Piedmont Airlines with 31 years of service in 1981. He was also an accomplished craftsman. He built replica models of the original Deep Creek Friends Meeting and the two-room schoolhouse in which he attended, and are presently on display in the current Meeting House. He grew up as a member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting. After moving to Winston Salem he became an active member of Winston Salem Friends Meeting and a charter member of Forsyth Friends Meeting. Upon retirement he and his wife moved back to Yadkin County and rejoined Deep Creek Friends Meeting where his ancestor was a charter member in 1793. Mr. Adams served as a Boy Scout Master in Winston Salem, was active in the Piedmont Retirees Association and the NC Yearly Meeting's Quaker Men Association. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to family, church and community. He always stayed active at home with his bountiful garden, tinkering in his shop or inventing some new thing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Nellie Ruth Wooten Adams. Also preceding him were son-in-law, Fred Thomas, daughter-in-law, Jean Adams and brother-in-law, Harold Wooten. Siblings preceding him in death were Billy and wife Kate Adams, Nina and husband Bill Lawson, Ora and husband Grady Holcomb, Asa and wife Claudia Adams, Mary and husband Jake Ingram, Tom and wife Jo Adams, Johnny Adams and Zeno Adams. Surviving are his two children Joseph Donald Adams of Winston Salem and daughter Gail Adams Thomas of Gainesville, GA. Grandchildren Todd (Trish) Adams of Kannapolis, Haynes Thomas of Murrayville, GA and Courtney Thomas of Brooklyn, NY. Great-grandchildren Tristen, Tanner and Trent Adams. He is survived by brother Marvin Adams, and his wife Minnie, and sisters-in-law Lilah Adams, Gladys Adams, Helen Wooten, Willena Moore and Faye (Ralph) Nelson and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at Deep Creek Friends Meeting, officiated by Rev. Georgianne Jones. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Deep Creek Friends Meeting, 1040 Deep Creek Church Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055. Online condolences may be made to www. gentryfuneralservice.com. Gail,
Our sincere thoughts and prayers on the
passing of your father. Mark was one of those special, kind, gracious people that one is blessed to meet even once during a lifetime.

In addition to our acquaintance, which goes back to
our high school years at North Forsyth,
I shall always cherish the memory and
the honor of serving as your dad's pastor for
a brief three of his 95 years at Forsyth Friends Meeting.

It was always a treat just to be in his presence. Phil 1:3.
