Mary Warren Obituary

Mary Alice Fulk Warren

Mar 17, 1921 - Oct 5, 2025

Mary Alice Fulk Warren, daughter of Maude Cornelius and Thomas Wake Fulk, passed away October 5, 2025 at Vienna Village Assisted Living in Pfafftown, NC. She was born in Flint Hill, NC on March 17, 1921, and very early in life moved to Lewisville, NC.

When she married a gentleman, Jack Norman Warren whom she met when they each were employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, she moved to Winston-Salem.

Mary Alice was a graduate of Lewisville High School, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Flora MacDonald College. She later continued studies at Wake Forest University for a limited time.

Her service to her family, her church, and her community were notable.

Mary Alice was a life member of Lewisville Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, member of the Board of Trustees, and as a member of the Woman's Missionary Union.

She was a past Regent of the Col. Joseph Winston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past President of the Forsyth County Republican Women, Vice Chairman of the NC Republican Party, and Vice President of the National Federation of Republican Women. For ten years, she served as NC's member of the Republican National Committee, and a member of their Executive Committee for the latter part of her term.

As a charter member of the Lewisville Historical Society, Mary Alice served one term as its Co-President, and she was a member of the Steering Committee for the restoration of the George Elias Nissen House. As a lover of plants, trees, and flowers, she loved the Lewisville Garden Club and served one term as its President.

Early in its organization, Mary Alice served as Chairman of the Forsyth County Historic Preservation Commission and later as a member of NC Preservation. She served on the Forsyth County Public Library Commission at a time when the Commission began its outstanding outreach program. She was appointed by Gov. James Holshouser and served as Chairman of the Public Librarian Certification Commission of the NC State Library. Mary Alice was also appointed by Gov. Holshouser and served as a member of the Disciplinary Commission of the North Carolina State Bar.

Among the awards and recognitions she received were the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. James G. Martin, a certificate of Merit from Historic Preservation NC, a certificate of appreciation from the Historic Property Commission of Forsyth County, Who's Who Among Colleges and Universities and is listed in its publication.

The donation of her Fulk family home place to the Town of Lewisville has provided the landscape for the establishment of the Jack Warren Park and Mary Alice Warren Community Center, public spaces which will serve citizens of Lewisville and surrounding communities for generations.

Mary Alice was predeceased by her husband Jack Warren, her parents Maude and Wake Fulk, her brother Thomas Wiley Fulk, Sr., an infant niece, and her great-nephew John Myers Fulk.

She is survived by a niece and two nephews, Deborah Fulk Sanders (Norman), Thomas Wiley Fulk, Jr. (Lea), and William Wake Fulk; a great-niece, Karey Sanders Wilson (Phillip); a great-nephew, Thomas Warren Fulk; a great-great nephew and great-great niece, and many wonderful and loyal cousins and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 9th, at Lewisville Baptist Church cemetery, with Rev. Philip Barnes, Rev. Phillip Wilson and Rev. Keith Huffman officiating.

A reception in the church fellowship hall will follow the service.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Vienna Village Assisted Living for their excellent attention and care.

Yesterday

Mary Alice was a wonderful lady.
She loved family as well as the community of Lewisville. She and my Mother, Laura Conrad Huffman, were first cousins and enjoyed each others company so much. My mother contributed a lot of material for the Lewisville Historical Society. Mary Alice was a true lady as I entertained her several times in my home.
She will be missed.

Yesterday

I first met Mary Alice at a meeting of the Lewisville Historical Society, where we became friends. She was an important leader in the LHS. We thank her every time that we meet in the Warren Center in Lewisville. Her life was a meaningful one and she will be missed. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends, especially fellow historians in the LHS.
