Nicholas Kandara Obituary

KANDARA WINSTON-SALEM - Nicholas Gus Kandara passed away Sunday, February 20, 2011, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was born in Winston-Salem on January 13, 1932, to Gus John Kandara and Theodora Tsiviki Kandara. He is survived by his wife Estelle Carabateas Kandara, to whom he has been married since June 24, 1962. He is also survived by a daughter, Terri Kandara Rix and husband Tom; a son, John Nicholas Kandara; a granddaughter, Emma Cecilia Rix; niece Carol Ann Weatherly Lawson and husband Steve, niece Patti Weatherly Phillips and husband Bob; niece Julie Pharr Baker and husband Chris; and many other relatives and friends who knew and loved him. His parents and his sister, Katherine Weatherly, preceded him in death. Mr. Kandara graduated from Hanes High School and Guilford College. He worked for Western Electric/Bell Labs as a draftsman and served in the Navy Reserve aboard a destroyer escort. Following his work at Western Electric, he taught Mechanical Drawing and Blueprint Reading for the Trades at Forsyth Technical Institute for more than 20 years. While at Guilford College, he was a member of the Sing & Eat Club, and for many years, he sang tenor in the choir at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Auto Sports Club and was also a tinsmith and member of the Winston-Salem Crafts Guild. He was a good son, husband, father, and uncle, a good teacher, and most of all a good man. Although he is no longer physically present, he will live in our hearts forever. May his memory be eternal. The body will lie in state at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 435 Keating Drive from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, February 23) with the Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, February 24) by Father Demetri Kangelaris. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park.
