Chambers, Roger Eugene "Gene"

On March 28, 2024, Roger Eugene Chambers went to his heavenly home. Known by most as "Gene", he was the son of the late Ann Bolt and Columbus E. Chambers.

Born Sept. 27, 1938, in Forsyth County, Gene lived most of his life in Winston-Salem. He began his working career at Carolina Garage working alongside his dad as a mechanic. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Carolina Garage that in later years became Mack Trucks. He worked as a clerk then as a parts manager. In 1981, Gene and his family moved to Charlotte, and he worked as a parts manager of Charlotte Mack. He retired as district manager. After retirement, Gene and his wife returned to Winston-Salem.

While at Carolina Garage, Gene met the love of his life, Norma Sue Hine. They were married April 14, 1962, and had 49 years together. Gene was an active member at Friedland Moravian Church and a scout master for the Friedland Boy Scouts, prior to moving to Charlotte. Gene also enjoyed camping with his family and fishing trips with his son. After retirement, Gene enjoyed wood-working, making beautiful pieces of furniture, and scroll pieces. He especially enjoyed being Pawpaw to his two grandsons.

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his wife, Norma Sue.

Those left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Ruth Ann Jacob and husband Ed, of Taylorsville, Gena Sue Chambers of Concord; son, Chappie Eugene Chambers of Manchester, CT; grandsons, Nicholas Jacobs and wife Emily and Joshua Jacobs, all of Taylorsville; great grandson, Archer; a great granddaughter on the way; his brother, Mike Chambers and wife Glenda of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law, Catherine Sloan of Snellville, GA; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Friedland Moravian Church on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 3 p.m., with Rev. John G. Rights officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the church graveyard.
