Vera King Nachand passed away the morning of November 8th, 2021. She was born Vera Loretta King on May 19th, 1935, in a log cabin at "The Hollows," Ararat, VA.

She grew up in a large family, with 3 brothers and 4 sisters. She was the daughter of Clercy Clement King and Harvey Lee King. Vera and her sisters would play house in the woods with broken houseware, and she had her favorite doll baptized in a creek on the farm by her brothers. In her 30s, one of the brothers gave her a new doll to replace the one they messed up during that baptism. In her early school years, she had to study her homework by kerosene lamp; electricity wasn't brought to the farm until she was 14, a single light bulb hanging in the kitchen near the wood-burning stove. Vera was baptized in the Ararat River, just a few feet from the church she attended, and that her father helped build.

As a single woman, she moved off the farm to work in Mount Airy, NC, and then to Winston-Salem, NC, where she married Kenneth G. Sharp, Sr., and had one son. The family eventually moved from Winston-Salem to Washington, DC, and then to Atlanta, GA, where Vera worked as Head Teller/Loan Officer for several banks. She enjoyed the fellowship of others and as a member of the Southern Railway Lady's Club created some lifelong friends.

After the death of her first husband, she married Arthur J. Nachand. Together, they went on several church building teams to South America to help fix up churches and homes for the locals. Vera loved traveling, meeting people, and helping wherever she could. She is going to be missed; she was my best friend, she was my mother.
