Vernon COLLINS Obituary

COLLINS WINSTON-SALEM Vernon Joseph "Joe" Collins Mar. 11, 1935 - Feb. 26, 2012 Mr. Vernon Joseph "Joe" Collins, 76, of 180 Ernest Lambeth Road, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born on March 11, 1935 in Rockingham to Walter Lee and Mary Lee Swink Collins he had made his home in this area for his entire life. He was a retired US Navy veteran of 20 years serving during both the Korean War and in Vietnam. He was a very active member of New Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church serving as head of many boards within the church, singing bass with the Choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Men, Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the church softball team. He sang in several traveling gospel groups, loved golf, and participated in rodeos while he was in the service. He loved the Atlanta Braves and the TV show "House". He married the former Charlotte Ann Allen on December 19, 1959, who survives of the home. Also surviving are his daughter, Dawn C. Harris and husband Bryan, and son, Barry Collins and wife Amy all of Winston-Salem, a sister, Lois Black of Thomasville, Six grandchildren, Megan, Emily, Katie, and Sarah, and Bryan Harris, Jr. and wife Brooke, and Bruce Harris, one great grandson, Bradley Harris, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. at New Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church with Rev. Sharon Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home on Highway 109 in Wallburg. The family suggests memorial contributions to the New Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Choir Fund, 6408 Friendship-Ledford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 in Vernon's name. Online condolences may be offered at www.jcgreenandsons.com

Never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Collins, but if his family is a reflection of his life and character, then he must have been a great guy and a godly man. It appears that his grandson, BJ, will continue his legacy well.
