Victor Mark Lefkowitz, 79, passed away on Tuesday, June 28. He was born on May 26, 1943 in Cumberland, MD to Rabbi Aaron H and Hadassah E Lefkowitz. Victor passed peacefully at Trellis Supportive Care (hospice). He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest son, Kenny.
Victor grew up in Elberon, NJ, and attended undergraduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and was a member of RPI's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. Following RPI, he joined the Air Force, where he spent 5 years around the world, including 3 years at Fuchu Air Base in Tokyo, Japan. While in Tokyo, Victor earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Hawaii â€" Overseas Division. Upon leaving active duty, he continued to serve his country in both the NY and NC Air National Guards until he ended his military career as a lt. colonel and the commander of the 263rd Air National Guard in Badin, NC, having collectively served nearly 30 years.
Following his active military duty, Victor worked for Exxon Mobile for 2 years as an engineer before deciding to change careers and become an attorney. In 1974, he moved to Winston-Salem, NC to attend Wake Forest University Law School, where he earned his juris doctor degree. Victor practiced law in Winston-Salem for 45 years until the time of his passing. He was admitted to the US Supreme Court, US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, US Court of Military Appeals, US Court of Claims, US Tax Court, and the Order of Barristers, along with being a member of the NC Academy of Trial Lawyers, and a member of the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers Association.
Victor valued family, friends, and community service. He was an active member and chorister of Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem since 1974, served on the Winston-Salem Human Relations Board, including holding the chairman role, was an adjunct professor of law at Wake Forest University, and donated an extensive amount of time performing pro bono legal work for family domestic cases as well as serving as guardian ad litem in many juvenile cases. Victor knew no strangers and was friendly, affectionate, and generous to all. He had a passion for the arts, enjoyed gardening and traveling throughout the world, and had a never-ending quest for knowledge. Victor also loved his Shih Tsu, Homer, who brought him limitless joy and love.
Victor is survived by his younger son, Todd, daughter-in-law, Catherine, and grandchildren, Walker and Ava, of Las Vegas, NV; his former spouse, Judith Luria, of Greensboro, NC; his brother, Edward, of Deal, NJ, his niece, Marcy, of Coral Springs, FL and his nephew, Robert, of Monmouth, NJ; his significant other, Beth Toomes, of Winston-Salem, NC; his former stepdaughter, Emma Kate (Wright) Reif, of Ft. Mill, SC; his loyal friend and legal assistant of 33 years, Mitzie Kepley, of Lewisville, NC; and cousins and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at Temple Emanual at 201 Oakwood Street in Winston-Salem. The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Children's Law Center of Central North Carolina, noting the gift is in memory of Victor Lefkowitz.
