INDIAN SPRINGS, Ala. - Dr. Warren McCormick Andrews, 71, of Indian Springs, Ala., died Thursday, June 19, 2003. He was born and raised in Montgomery, Ala., where he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. He attended Auburn University for a B.S. in engineering physics, Vanderbilt University for his M.S. in Physics and the University of California-Berkeley, where he earned both an M.S. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering. While at Berkeley, he was employed by Aerojet General Nucleonics to design nuclear reactors. His honoraries included: co-recipient of the Farum Award for outstanding student in nuclear engineering, Phi Eta Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Pi Sigma, Pi Mu Epsilon, Tau Nu Tau, Scabbard and Blade and Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. Upon earning his Ph.D., he was hired by Auburn University to coordinate and develop plans for the Nuclear Science Center and then served as the director of the center, overseeing construction and staffing. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and then the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the Alabama State Radiation Advisory Board, American Nuclear Society and State Board for Professional Nuclear Engineering Licensing. He worked for Southern Nuclear as the manager of pressurized water reactor core analysis, overseeing the Farley and Vogtie plants. He retired after 26 years of service. He was a member of the founding board and attended the Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. James Warren and Mary McCormick Andrews; and a brother, James Corner Andrews, all of Montgomery, Ala. Survivors include his wife, Lynn Martin Hobbie Andrews; two daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth-Lee Andrews Lawley and Carlton Roger Lawley of Winston-Salem and Lynn Martin-Hobbie Andrews of New York City; a brother and sister-in-law, John Fontaine and Ellen Rainer Andrews of Montgomery, Ala.; a niece, Brannon Fontaine Andrews of Austin, Texas; and a nephew, James Ranier Andrews of Montgomery, Ala. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, June 22, at Church of the Ascension (Episcopal) on Lawrence St. in Montgomery. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 1 p.m. in the church's library. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Brain Tumor Treatment and Research Program, University of Alabama in Birmingham, 510 20th St. S., F.O.T. Room 1020, Birmingham, AL 35294 or the Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road, Indian Springs, AL 35124. Brooks and Cargile of Montgomery are directing services.
