William Horton Petree died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005. He was born to Elbert Heaton Petree and Ethel Tucker Petree on Nov. 4, 1920. He grew up in Winston-Salem and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1938. He attended Draughn's Business School and worked for his father at E.H. Petree Electric Co. for two years. Encouraged by the Rev. Douglas Rights, his minister at Trinity Moravian Church, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill with the help of a loan from the Winston-Salem Foundation and graduated in 1944. Bill married Lena Winston Morris on Dec. 23, 1943, and enlisted in the Marines during his final college year. He graduated from Officer Candidates School as a Second Lieutenant and was sent to Saipan Island on active duty. He was in occupied Japan in 1946. While he was overseas his first child, William Horton Petree Jr. was born. Inspired by an attorney he met in the service, Bill attended UNC Law School and graduated in the fall of 1948. While in law school, his second child, Mary Jo Petree was born. Bill began his law practice with the firm of Ratcliff, Vaughn, Hudson and Ferrell in 1948 and later served as managing partner for a number of years. The law firm became Petree Stockton before it merged with an Atlanta firm to become Kilpatrick Stockton. Bill was a counselor and adviser to clients, fellow lawyers and young attorneys. He was one of the earliest tax practitioners in N.C. and was active in the Bar for over 50 years. In addition to his law practice, Bill volunteered in civic and charitable activities. At Home Moravian Church he served on the boards of elders and trustees, taught Sunday school and played in the Moravian band for 62 years. He served as chairman of the board of the Trustees for the Moravian Church, Southern Province. He was on the founding board of the Moravian Home Inc. (now Salemtowne) and was active in fundraising and support there until his death. Bill served as president of the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club and served on the board of Salem Academy and College. One of his most enriching experiences was serving as chairman of the board of the Winston-Salem Foundation. Bill loved his family, his church, work, friends, fishing and travel. He is survived by his wife, Lena; son, Bill and wife, Katherine; daughter, Mary Jo and husband, Frank Murphy; five grandchildren, William Horton Petree III (Chip), Mary Elizabeth Murphy Geiger and husband, Chris, Stacy Louise Petree Davis and husband, Steven, William Franklin Murphy and wife, Deborah, and James Patrick Murphy (Jay); and five great-grandchildren, Wesley Hurst Davis, Henry Ashworth Petree, William Jackson Davis, Anna Winston Davis and Cole Lawrence Geiger. Wow! Mr. Petree was a wonderful man! I worked for him at Salemtowne Retirement Community and I had some great memories with him! Mr. Petree read to me and spent several hours with me during the day. He was like a grandfather to me and reminded me so much of my great grandfather. I loved him dearly and to the family I am so sorry about him passing. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with your family!

It was with great sadness I read of the passing of Mr. William H. Petree this morning. I had the pleasure of being a part of this kind and gracious gentleman's care when at Salemtowne getting to know him, his loving wife and children. Such a sweet family all very caring and supportive of each other. I would have loved to know Mr. Petree before his illness as he was quite a charmer with such a wonderful smile despite his poor health. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with each of you in your time of loss. I wish I could have been there with you, Bill & Mary Jo, in his final days as your unfaltering sense of caring for your parents was quite touching in these days we currently live in when so many don't take the time for the parents who loved them and nutured them in their youth. I will be unable to attend any of the services for Mr. Horton, but my thoughts will be with each of you. Gather peace & serenity in the difficult days to come knowing Mr. Horton is with our Lord & Savior in heaven attaining his angel wings smiling down on you and will always have a sweet presence in your hearts and memories.
With deepest sympathy,
