John Vincent Compton passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of April 1, 2021 after a two-year battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
He was born in Wilmington, Ohio on September 4, 1962 to Robert Compton and Rebecca VanDervort Thumma.
John was a member of the 1980 class of Wilmington High School. While there, he was a part of the Pride of Wilmington Marching Band, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Ann Tilton Compton.
John and Ann were married on September 3, 1983. Together they raised three children — Leslie (Matthew) Schmieder of Zanesville, Lauren (Thomas) Stroud of Wilmington and Jordan Compton of Athens — of whom he was so very proud.
His greatest joy and the thing that kept him young at heart was being "Pa" to his seven beautiful grandchildren: Scarlett Patterson, Stormie Stroud, Wren Stroud, Charlee Stroud, Everett Schmieder, Elise Schmieder and Harrison Schmieder.
John was passionate about music and so enjoyed his many visits with family and friends to New Orleans, where he felt he truly belonged.
Other than his wife, children, and grandchildren, John leaves behind his parents, Robert (Patti) Compton of Lebanon, Rebecca (Jim) Thumma of Martinsville and brother Tom Compton of Mt. Orab. He also leaves behind many brothers and sisters-in-law: Brenda Tilton of Wilmington, Doug (Melinda) Tilton of Wilmington, Mary (Joe) DeFrank of Mason, John (Lisa) Tilton of Huber Heights. Additionally, he leaves behind his dear friend Susan Moore of Wilmington and many loved nieces and nephews, friends, cousins, aunts and uncles. His three dogs Zoey, Gibson and Cotton will truly miss his presence.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Don and Barbara Tilton; and brother-in-law, George Tilton.
The family would like to give thanks to Community Care Hospice for all of their help during his illness with a very special thank you to Trish and Judy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in John's name to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, 3634 W.
