I worked with Charlie for many years before I discovered that he was fond of telling stories. Once, he related to me how he used to bring a lunch pail of fish and chips to his dear aunt every Friday at the woolen factory where she worked. The noise was deafening and the floors were slick with lanolin. I could imagine the smell, the noise, the dust, and ever-devoted Charlie slipping and sliding across the wooden floors to make the delivery.

Later he related how he and his wife were married in a convent of nuns by a monk with bare toes sticking out from under his robes, before all assembled--the monk, the nuns, the witnesses, and the newlyweds--sat down to enjoy a steak dinner. I commented how that sounded really nice. And he leaned back and replied wistfully, "It was."

Charlie had a raconteur's gift and not only that, he spoke French with a perfect French accent!

I will remember him well.

Je vous prie de bien vouloir accepter mes sincères condoléances.
