James Doyle Obituary

PAWTUCKET - Honorable James E. Doyle, 78, former Mayor of the City of Pawtucket (1998-2011), passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Friday, August 26th, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Joan C. (Richer) Doyle for 52 years. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Vincent J., Sr. and Loretta C. (Tessier) Doyle.
James devoted his life to his family and the City of Pawtucket. He was a 1960 graduate of Providence College, and began his service to the city as a teacher at Pawtucket West High School, now Charles E. Shea High School from 1960 until 1962.
James also proudly served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard. He was employed as a sales representative for the Massachusetts Envelope Company, Inc. as well as several pharmaceutical companies. In 1970, he was elected to the Pawtucket City Council, where he served for twenty-seven years. During his time on the council, Mr. Doyle served as President from 1982 until 1987. He worked tirelessly serving on various committees ranging from the beautification of the city to finance. In 1997 he was elected to the office of Mayor of Pawtucket.
During his thirteen year tenure as mayor, he spearheaded the "reawakening" of the city, restoring pride for Pawtucket residents. Through his efforts, he created the Pawtucket Arts & Entertainment District, drawing in artists and small businesses to the city's vacant and underused mills and buildings. In 2011, he received the Heritage Award from the Pawtucket Foundation, of which he helped organize and was a great supporter from the very beginning.
Mayor Doyle was instrumental in the creation of the annual Pawtucket Arts Festival, which over the past seventeen years has grown into the largest arts festival in New England. While mayor, Mr. Doyle also oversaw the revitalization of the city's economy, and the construction of a state-of-the-art dog pound and a new water treatment facility, that the U.S. EPA deemed "a model for the nation".
Mayor Doyle was the city's longest serving mayor since its incorporation in 1886. After his retirement from politics, Mr. Doyle was named Vice President of Business Development for the Bristol County Savings Bank. Through his position with Bristol County Savings Bank, Mr. Doyle continued to work closely with the business community of Pawtucket, helping to grow and develop new businesses and opportunities.
Through his forty years of selfless public service, Mayor Doyle leaves a lasting legacy on the quality of life and economic vitality of his beloved City of Pawtucket and will be fondly remembered by all.
Besides his beloved wife, Mr. Doyle leaves three children, Joanne M. Doyle of Providence, Cristen J. Doyle Cobery and Jamie E. Doyle II and his wife, Jaclyn all of Pawtucket; seven grandchildren, Ellen, Caroline, Olivia, Tucker, Chloe, Jamie III, and Paige; a brother, Vincent J. Doyle, Jr. of Cumberland; two nephews Christopher and Brian; a niece, Kimberly and one great-niece, Evelyn. He will be dearly missed by his beloved dogs, Lucie and Jake.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 2nd, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Church, 755 Central Ave., Pawtucket. The burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery. VISITATION will be Thursday, September 1st, 2016 from 3 to 7 p.m. at WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the Jeanne Jugan Residence, C/O Little Sisters of the Poor, 964 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860 would be appreciated. Mr mayor, I lived on armistice Blvd in Pawtucket for 20 years. I had so much respect for you. Any problems that occurred. We're always solved almost immediately. On my graduation from bvcap for my ged you looked at me and told me how proud you were of me, that meant more to me then my own family saying it. You were such the sweetest man and your son jamie is just as sweet. May you rest now in the sweetest of places comfortably and in the arms of Jesus. To the entire family I send my condolences. I knew how much my heart hurt so I can only imagine your pain. You are all in my prayers.

Dear Joan and family.

We are deeply saddened on the loss of Jim, Husband, father, grandfather and friend. His kindnesses to our family were numerous. The first time I met Jim was in 1973 while he was campaigning for office. It was in city hall and he had with him two little girls, one in his arms and another attached to his hip. I guess you know their names. He was very engaging then and the same person years later. We are so lucky to have known him.
God bless you all

To the Doyle Family,

I am sorry I cannot be there today to pay my respects to Mayor Doyle and your family. What a wonderful man, always in a cheerful mood and could bring a smile to anyone's face. I will never forget the sound of his contagious laugh.

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you and whispered "come to Me".
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.

With my deepest sympathy,

Dear Joan and Family,
I first met Jimmy when I was a student at West as he often ran after school detention, We were both longtime Pawtucket boys who never strayed too far from the city we grew up in. We remained friends and, Jimmy knew most of my family, through seeing us at breakfast every Sunday morning, at the Modern Diner.
Jimmy was just a great guy and we will think of him, sitting in the back room of the diner, greeting everyone with a smile and a pat on the back.
He will be sadly missed.
Our sincere condolences to all.

I am a retired Pawtucket school teacher. For many years I took my 4th grade students on a field trip to City Hall.On many occasions, Mayor Doyle would come out to greet the children. He would invite us all into his office where he would let the students sit in his big chair. Their faces lit up. His love for his job and the city of Pawtucket was evident in his simple words to the children. His unspoken but clear message to those many 4th graders was clear and simple, "Dream Big."

Mrs. Doyle, Joanne, Cristen and Jaime,
I am sorry for your loss.
My name is Liz D'Ambra and I have been a very lucky girl to have had all of you and the Mayor as my neighbors since birth. I have many wonderful experiences I could share with you in regards to my interactions with the Mayor. However, there is one that sticks in my head until today.
I was a little girl at St. Leo's School. My class visited the Mayor's Office. He spoke of his day to day work. Then he said these three words about his "Pride in Pawtucket." I have carried this with me and at 23 years of age I am proud to say I am from The City of Pawtucket and still live here.
I will miss him beeping his horn and his long arm stretching out the window to say hi to me and my friends.
I will always remember the Mayor, a true man of great integrity.

My favorite story about him is the one my daughter told me about how friendly and outgoing he was when she needed his assistance to get her badge for Girl Scouts. He will be sorely missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Hope the food is as good in Heaven as it was at the China Inn and Modern Diner (2 of the last places my family saw him).
