INSPIRATION
Sis, you were always an inspiration to me. I recall, as a young teenager, when you would visit, how I wanted to be just like you. I admired you for your intelligence, kindness and class. You always had kind things to say no matter what. You loved your family and wanted the best for us all. I remember when I graduated from high school you talked to me about what I wanted to do with my life and like so many teenagers, I had no clue. You believed that education was the key that would open doors, not just for me, but for anyone who was willing to put in the hard work. And so, off to California I went, to stay with you and your family so that I could go to college.
You would always talk to me about what I wanted in life. You helped me with my school work and encouraged me to stay abreast of what was going on in the world, because you said, you should always know a little something about current events. We had wonderful conversations and I just thought you were the smartest person in the world. Unfortunately, I didn't stay with you long enough to get a degree, but I truly believe that experience was the catalyst to my future.
Even after returning home and getting a job at American Tourister, I would always go back to those conversations we had. About how you would tell me that I could be anything I wanted and to never let my past define my future; that I did not have to stay in Woonsocket and work in a factory. And when you said these things, you were not criticizing those who did, it was your way of letting me know that there is a big world out there and I could be and do anything.
After returning to Woonsocket, I didn't think going back to school was an option. But I could still follow in your footsteps, so I decided to join the military. My remembrance of our conversations did not end there because there were many many times I wanted to come home after each enlistment, but each time I can hear you say move forward, and so forward I did.
I have found inspiration in one way or another from my entire family, but the inspiration I received from you dear Sister is no doubt directly related to who I am.
Love you Sis!
