Malcom J. Longley

1930 - 2017

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Malcom J. Longley, 86, died February 19th, 2017, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, September 24, 1930, the son of the late Celestain Longley and Marion (Draper) Longley. Mr. Longley attended schools in Plymouth and Ashland before joining the United States Navy in January of 1948. He was aboard the USS English DD 696 from 1948 to 1957, during which time he became a Chief Boilerman. Transferring to the USS Cascade AD16, he became the ships Chief Master at Arms. Between 1964 and 1967, he dutifully served on the USS Massey, USS Wilkenson, USS Saratoga and retired for the USS Yosemity AD19 in 1967 as a Master Chief Steam Propulsionman. During his Naval career, he was in several war zones, the most noteable during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951, aboard the English. For that tour he was awarded: Korean Service Medal (7 battle stars), The Korean Presidential Unit Citation from President Singman Rhee, American Service Medal (second award), Good Conduct Medal (4th award), National Defense Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. While stationed in Rome, he had an audience with Pope Pius XII.
After his retirement from the military, he became a power plant operator at the US Navy Public Works in Newport, Rhode Island.
After several promotions he became the Director of Utilities where he remained until his retirement in June 1986.
Mr. Longley is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, whom was his best friend, Patricia (Dellecese) Longley.
He also leaves 4 children: James R. Longley and his girlfriend Donna Peyton, of Portsmouth RI, Roxanne Yergeau and her husband James of Middletown, RI, Patrick M. Longley and his wife Michelle of West Palm Beach, FL and Michelle Saucier and her husband Leo, of Sutton, MA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren; Hillary, Nathan, Ryan, Brandon and Cody. Three sisters, Christine DiMascio of MA, Jane Soule of DE and Elaine Booth of CA; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by 2 brothers; "Pesty" and John Longley and 1 sister Margaret Fote.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 5pm in the Keene-Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Rd., North Smithfield, RI. Burial will be private. Calling hours are prior to the service from 2pm until 5pm. www.brownfuneralhomes.com
