Raymond Mathieu Obituary

PAWTUCKET - Raymond F. Mathieu, 102, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 24, 2021. He was the beloved husband of the late Anna D. (Raftery) Mathieu and longtime companion of Nancy McAdams of Pawtucket.

A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Francis X. and Jenny (George) Mathieu. Ray was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who proudly served his country overseas as a Master Sergeant. He and his late father were the founders of the former East Side Checker Club on Benefit Street in Pawtucket, which Ray owned and operated for sixty-five years until retiring in January 2014. Ray loved his customers and shared their many anniversaries, birthdays, and other celebrations over the decades.

Ray was a communicant of St. Teresa Church where he regularly brought his homemade chicken soup to parishioners in need. He was a member of the Attleboro Lodge of Elks #1014 for fifty-five years and the Knights of Columbus. Ray was also a longtime member of the Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, MA, where he enjoyed playing golf regularly with his longtime golfing buddies.

Ray loved to travel with his family and friends and enjoyed driving with the top down on his yellow 1968 Cadillac convertible. Always smiling, he truly loved life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Besides his longtime companion, he leaves two children and their spouses, Raymond M. and Lucy F. Mathieu of Providence and Deborah and Tony Miguel of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Jill A. Teixeira and her husband, John, of Cumberland, Raymond G. Mathieu of Pawtucket and Marc D. Mathieu of Providence and two great-granddaughters, Joy and Hope Teixeira. He was the brother of the late Armand Mathieu and Claire Caufield.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 29th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Teresa Church, 358 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket. VISITATION will be held on Thursday, October 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made In Memory of Raymond F. Mathieu to the Attleboro Elks Scholarship Fund, 887 South Main Street, Attleboro, MA 02703 or to HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.

We have always loved the checker club for many many years. Great food and service. My mother and your father were both parishioners of st. Teresa church. My mother told me your dad left a pint of soup every Saturday at her car. He and she had a great respect for each other, your father was a thoughtful and kind man.

Ray was an amazing man. I met him when I worked at the Newport Playhouse and he instantly became a favorite person of mine. His giving spirit, his joy, his larger than life personality all made me feel that everything was right with the world. He will be missed. I am unable to attend the calling hours or mass, but I am with you all in spirit and will continue to pray for you. Thank you for sharing Ray with all of us.

Such a nice man. I remember when I got engaged, I show him my ring and he said my gift to you both will be the meal is on the house he also gave us a bottle of champagne. We said no that is not necessary. He said don’t argue with me. You guys come here all the time let me give this to you. May he Rest In Peace. Prayers to his family.

Our deepest sympathy to the entire family. My wife and I ate at the Checker Club often. It was our favourite place to eat. No baked stuffed shrimp anywhere compared to Rays. Best of all was when he circulated amongst the tables and chatted with his customers. We were so sad when he closed but were happy for him in his retirement. He was a kind and generous man and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John & Beverly Yuill
