Brother Paul Hebert, S.C.
PASCOAG - BROTHER PAUL HEBERT, S.C., 81, of Pascoag, RI, died at Steere House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in
Providence, RI, at 3:00 PM on January 18, 2024. Brother Paul, the son of the late Jean Marie Hebert and Pauline LeRoux, was born in Acushnet, MA. He joined the formation program of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Harrisville, RI, in 1958. He professed his first vows in Harrisville, RI, and later made his perpetual profession at the Brothers' chapel at Roma, Lesotho, on December 24, 1966. As a scholastic, Brother Paul studied English Literature at St. Michael's College in
Winooski, VT, and earned a Bachelor's degree in 1966. He later earned a post-graduate certificate in Spirituality from the Marist Institute in Rome, Italy, in 1973 and a Master's degree in Psychology and Counseling from Anna Maria College in 1985.
Brother Paul served as a teacher of Latin, English, History, Religion and Science. Later, he became a guidance counselor. He ministered in many of the Brothers' schools throughout the New England area, in Sharon, MA, Lewiston, ME, Nashua, NH, and
Woonsocket, RI.
Sensing God's invitation to spread the Gospel in foreign lands, Brother Paul generously responded by volunteering to become a missionary in Africa. He served as a teacher and formator of young Brothers for 11 years in Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Returning to the States after his missionary experience, Paul continued to be available for Province service as needed. He served as Vocation Director the Brothers for 8 years. Then, he became the director of the Mission Co-op, a ministry that financially supported the African apostolate. He gave talks at parishes across the USA and the U.K. and invited Brothers throughout the U.S. and England to assist him in the effort. He ultimately raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the missionary efforts in his 24-year tenure.
In 2021, Paul retired from active ministry to address failing health issues. He was admitted to the same Nursing Home as his dad, and passed into eternal life, surrounded by his family, in the same room as his father.
Brother Paul was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by three brothers and their wives, Roland (Marguerite) Hebert, Raymond (Loretta) Hebert, Roger (Laurie) Hebert; his sister and brother-in-law, Julie (Denis) Richard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements for Brother Paul will take place at the Brothers' chapel (685 Steere Farm Road) in Pascoag, RI, on Saturday, January 27, 2024. A wake will be held from 9:00 - 10:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. A lunch in Brother Paul's honor will be served immediately following the wake and Mass in the Brothers' residence. Due to weather concerns, he will be interred in the Brothers' cemetery in Pascoag at a later date.
