William Smith Obituary

NORTH SMITHFIELD - William A. Smith, 88, of North Smithfield died April 27, 2021 in Cherry Hill Manor, Johnston. He was the husband of Clare (Rivard) Smith, whom he married April 19, 1952. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late William T. and Evelyn (Brown) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a construction superintendent for the former Calcagni Construction, Johnston, retiring in 1995. His last project was supervising the construction of the elephant and giraffe exhibit at Roger Williams Park Zoo. He had previously worked for Iannuccillo Construction, Providence, for 20 years and had served as a Building Inspector for the town of North Smithfield.

Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy with the Seabees during the Korean War. He was a dedicated communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Slatersville and previously was a member of the Sacred Heart Men's Club, Woonsocket.

Mr. Smith was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 94, Warwick and a Lieutenant in the Primrose Volunteer Fire Department, where he was part of the Brothers of the Brush. He enjoyed hockey and coached youth leagues. He especially loved spending time at the beach. He was a history buff, but, above all, his greatest pride was his children and grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Clare, he leaves their children, Linda Bouffard and her husband, George, of Chepachet, Cheryl Custer and her husband, Craig, of Johnston, Melissa O'Connor and her husband, Dennis, of Tampa, FL, Matthew Smith and his partner, Marlene Briggs of Enfield, CT, and Susan Parillo and her husband, Richard, of Johnston; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, and another blessing on the way.

His funeral mass will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2021, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., Slatersville. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241.
