Larry Harney Obituary
In the pre-dawn hours of August 17, 2025, Larry Dean Harney of Rockville went home to be with his Lord. Born October 14, 1943 in Indianapolis to Forest and Ruth (Lang) Harney, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (McKinney) Harney, children, David (Penny) Harney, Karen (Tom) Berry and Scott (Angi) Harney; eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Hofmann.
Larry and Barbara's life together began as high school sweethearts their junior year at Rockville High. Theirs was a partnership of steadfast love and commitment in every way possible. Having lost his own parents before the age of two, Larry became a father at age 18 and was the living image of a parent that his children and grandchildren aspire to be.
His first job was as a press operator at RR Donnelley in Crawfordsville before joining his father-in-law Max McKinney's business as a body man for eight years. His ambition then led him to join Dormeyer Industries in Chicago and led to relocating to Chicago suburbs in 1974. He was hired as an industrial engineer and performed many different roles at Dormeyer finishing his career as Executive VP and GM of Manufacturing with a relocation back to Rockville and the flagship Rockville plant. He had the great pleasure of finishing his professional career with Britt Tool, Inc. in Brazil, Indiana. He was a member of Rockville Christian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Board Chairman and taught the Cornerstone Sunday school class. He was also active with the Talk's mentor program in Parke County.
Larry loved the outdoors. You could frequently find him wading Sugar Creek, he could've been a guide on Racoon Lake, made several trips to the Boundary Waters and other Canadian destinations, shore fished near their Naples, Florida condo and tread many other woods and waters. He was a skilled beekeeper and woodworker, famous for his bird houses and the short legends he told of them, partnered with Barbara in making woodcrafts and toys that they sold at the Bridge Festival. He loved to travel both across our great country and to many international destinations.
His family believed that there were a few things that he couldn't do or wouldn't be willing to try. He was a remarkable man and will live within us all for all of our days.
Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Saturday, August 23, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville, with Rev. Patrick J. Fahey officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation is from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday.
