Barry L. Scheirer

Barry L. Scheirer, 86, of Lower Alsace, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025 in the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of the late Maria del Carmen (Orellana) Scheirer. Born in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late George and Hazel (Miller) Scheirer. Barry graduated from Reading High School. He proudly served his country in The United States Air Force for 23 years, serving 3 tours in Spain, a tour in Taiwan, and tours at several bases in the continental US. Barry worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years before retiring in 2001. He was a member of St. Catharine of Siena.

Barry shared a love of Spain with MariCarmen, his wife of 59 years, whom he met there on his first tour of duty in 1958. Though he never studied a foreign language in high school, he learned to speak Spanish like a native -- often so convincingly that Spaniards he met scarcely believed he was a Yankee. Over the years, they both traveled together to Spain many times to visit MariCarmen's extended family whom they both loved very much. Barry made his last trip to Spain in 2022.

Barry is survived by his children: Esperanza, wife of Theodore Wickert, of Exeter, Jorge Scheirer, husband of Tracy, of Exeter, and Carlos Scheirer, husband of Cheryl, Oakland, FL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Sara, Victoria (Scheirer) Hughes, wife of Jacob, Stephen Wickert, husband of Emily Huber, Stephanie, William, and Andy. Barry was preceded in death by his brother Terry Scheirer and sister Joan R. Zook.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 11, 2025 beginning at 11:00 am at St. Catharine of Siena, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Berks County Veterans Affairs in support of BCVTA, 20 Commerce Drive, Wyomissing, PA 19610.
