Mavis Johnson Obituary

Mavis Ruth Johnson, born on September 3, 1934, in Bruce, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025. She spent many devoted years working as a sales clerk in the retail industry, primarily at Kellwood, where her friendly demeanor and dedication to service earned her the affection of many. Mavis was a proud mother to her three daughters, Shelia Sowell, Phyllis Barnard, and Pamela Hollingsworth, who carry forward her legacy of strength and compassion. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Elouise Lafayette, and her brothers, John EL McCormick and Kenneth McCormick. Mavis found immense joy in her role as a grandmother to five grandchildren: Brandy Smith, Matt Sowell, Monte Barnard, Devan Martinez, and Valerie McAcy, and was proud to be a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, who will forever remember her love and guidance. As we reflect on Mavis's life, we remember a woman who lived simply but richly, sharing laughter and love with those around her. She inspired many through her resilience and commitment to her family, teaching them the importance of togetherness and compassion. No formal services are planned at this time. Please keep Mavis's loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time. Mavis will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all those she touched. Mavis was preceded in death by: husband, Richard Johnson, father, Isom McCormick, mother, Ruthie McCormick, and brothers Laverl McCormick and Eugene McCormick.
