Mr. Smith was born on July 16, 1937, in Tippah County to the late Paul and Gena Smith. He received his education from Tippah Union School and married his beloved wife, Mrs. Janie Lois Clayton Smith, on July 10, 1955. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2022, after 66 years of marriage.
Mr. Smith, known as David, was a Christian and faithful member of Academy Baptist Church and often attended New Prospect Primitive Baptist Church. He grew up working on the family farm and developed into a skilled tradesman in welding and construction. One of his proudest projects was helping to build Union County Hospital, now known as Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was also a talented mechanic and the successful business owner of Smith's Auto Salvage. In later years, he served as a manager for the Boll Weevil Eradication Program for the State of Mississippi.
In his younger years, he enjoyed coon hunting and the fellowship of friends and family, often going camping and fishing. Mr. Smith had a generous heart and never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. Whether it was sharing his time, skills, or resources, he gave freely and quietly, always putting others before himself.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, the memory of "Daddy" will be cherished by one daughter, Betty Smith Bass (Ray) of Blue Mountain, and three sons: Glenn Smith (Brenda) and Johnny Smith (Laine), both of Blue Mountain; and Jackie Smith (Carol) of Fulton. He also leaves behind a dear daughter-in-law, Phyllis Smith of Blue Mountain; two brothers, John R. Smith (Helen) of Somerville, TN, and Vernon Smith (Val) of Rohnert Park, CA; sister-in-law, Janie Clayton (Gerald), and brother-in-law, Larry Clayton (Joy), 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janie; one daughter, Deborah Smith; two sons, Terry Paul Smith and Daniel Paul Smith; and two brothers.
