Cora Godbey Obituary

Cora "Marguerite" Godbey, 91, of Sissonville, WV, entered into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, October 19, 2025, following a short illness. Marguerite was born in Roane County, WV, and had made her home in Sissonville for the past 58 years. She devoted her life to her family, her church, and her community. She was married for 70 years to her loving husband, John Franklin Godbey, and together they were inseparable-whether attending family gatherings, church services, ballgames, hunting and fishing trips, or simply enjoying time in the kitchen preparing meals for those she loved. Marguerite worked for many years as a teacher's aide at Flinn Elementary School in Sissonville, where she was known for her kindness and dedication to children. She was also a faithful member of Humphreys Memorial Church, where she joyfully served alongside her church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Addie Whited, and her sister, Marie (Kay) Gough. She is survived by her devoted husband, John Franklin Godbey of Sissonville; daughter Joan (Michael) Hathaway of Red House, WV; son Burl Leslie Godbey of Louisa, KY; grandchildren Megan (Dylan) Harrison of Red House, WV, and John (Haley) Hathaway of Red House, WV; and four great-grandchildren, Madden Harrison, Delaney Harrison, Tate Hathaway, and Palmer Hathaway, all of Red House, WV. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Humphreys Memorial Church, Sissonville WV with Rev. George Webb officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Dunbar, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to HospiceCare's Hubbard House in Charleston, WV, in gratitude for their compassion and care. Marguerite will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her devotion to her family, and the joy she brought into every life she touched.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Godbey was a wonderful neighbor. Her and Mr Godbey were always so good to all of us. Have to share this memory, I was cutting my mom´s grass and came upon a snake. Well I went running to them. John came walking over leisurely, but Marguerite grabs the hoe before she came to rescue me. She said, John you need to kill it!! She was a wonderful lady. I´m really going to miss her.
