Sammie Cole Obituary

In Loving Memory of a Life Well Lived

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sammie (Sam) Edward Cole on July 15, 2025, in Woodstock, Georgia. Born March 1, 1937, in Corton, West Virginia, Sam was the beloved child of William Harold Cole and Mary Macel Cole. Growing up in Clendenin, he graduated from Clendenin High School in 1955, ready to embark on a journey marked by service, love, and unwavering faith.

Following his graduation, Sam answered the call of duty and joined the military, serving honorably in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was discharged in December 1963, the same year he married the love of his life, Barbara Sue Cox, with whom he shared a deep bond until her passing in August 2022.

Sam's legacy extends beyond his military service. He was a dedicated public servant, retiring as assistant treasurer of the state of West Virginia. His commitment to community was reflected in his longstanding membership in the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star.

A man of many talents, Sam was deeply passionate about music, especially singing hymns alongside his wife, who accompanied him on the piano. Their voices lifted in praise were a testament to their shared faith and joy for the Lord. Sam cherished quiet moments at their mountain cabin in West Virginia, where he gathered loved ones around the campfire, recounting stories of his childhood and the many adventures that filled his remarkable life.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary; his siblings, Mary Madeline, William Rex, Virginia Maxine, Harold O., Willa Jean, and James Sheldon; his beloved wife, Barbara; and his great-granddaughter, Heather Lynn.

He is survived by his devoted children, Jerry DeWayne (Faith), Belinda Gail (Rob), Brain Scott (Missy), Kimberly Dawn (Tim). Sam was a cherished grandfather and great- grandfather to a loving group of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Sarah (Matt), Tiffany, Adrian (Dewayne), Brittany (Justin), Andrew (Karla) and many others, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His generous spirit and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In his final years, Sam made his home in Zephyrhills, Florida, where he attended Charity Baptist Church and continued to serve his Savior with humility and joy.

Though we mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing Sam has been called home, reunited with his beloved wife, free from suffering, and embraced by eternal peace. He will lay to rest beside her in Clendenin, West Virginia. The date of the service is to be determined.

Sam Cole's kindness, faith, and devotion to family and community leave an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy will live on in the stories shared around the campfire, the hymns sung in church, and the lives he touched with his unwavering generosity.

Rest in Peace, Daddy.
