Sue Settle Obituary

Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath but grievous words stir up anger.
SUE CROOKSHANKS SETTLE passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024 at Hospice House at the age of 97. She was born in Quinwood, WV on June 1, 1926. Her memories of her childhood were warm and loving and she maintained her bond with her 4 siblings, all of whom pre-deceased her.
She joined the Cadet Nursing Corp and studied under the guidance of the nuns at Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing. It was during that time she met her future husband, Edmund Carr Settle of Fayette County, WV, who had recently returned from the European theater of WW2. On the day of her graduation, August 29, 1947, released from the requirement that nurses in training not marry, they were wed. Completely devoted to her husband, she loved and supported him through their 64 years of marriage.
For more than 30 years, she was a school nurse in Kanawha County, WV, starting that career in one-room schools, which she remembered quite fondly. Her concern for her school children was near legendary and many remember her into their adulthood. She remained close to her friends in nursing school, those made throughout her school nurse years and those she met after her retirement. A highly intelligent women, she took multiple postgraduate courses later in life for the enjoyment of the educational experience. Her only B was in tennis!
She was a deeply religious person throughout her life. She was completely devoted to her family and her 2 children, Edmund Jr. and Susan, were forever greatly impacted by her love and constancy. Later, she adored her 3 grandsons: Judson, Harrison and Austin, who loved their grandmother deeply.
Buddhism teaches us that: to walk safely through the maze of human life one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue. She was the personification of both. Although well aware of the vicissitudes of life, her generous, kind and constant loving nature was a source of strength for all around her. She never wavered from this path. Anyone who spent time with her was better off for it.
She is deeply missed by family and her memory and influence will live on through them.

Susan & Ed: We're very sorry to learn of the loss of your mother and send you both our sincere condolences. My own mother passed in 2016 at age 99, Eunice Locke Krebs, and she knew your mother very well from our Staunton Elementary years on, for decades. They were good friends. Yours, John & Susanne Locke

I knew your Mother through your Dad. He spoke of her with such love. I don’t remember ever meeting Sue but did speak with her a couple times on the phone. But I always felt that I knew her. I am a retired pharmacist and regularly had dealings with Ed. Please accept my sincere sympathy.

Dear Susan,
I am so sorry to hear of your dear mother´s passing. She was a lovely person. When my sister, Beth, needed allergy shots, your mom came to the house to administer them. And she comforted my little sister. I was always welcome to come to your house & play. She drove us all to the airport when I had to fly back to Florida that summer. I am sending you & your family my heartfelt sympathy & love.
Your childhood friend,
Debbie Kay Call Kimbrell
