Betty also left behind many special nieces and nephews that were always so good to her, as well as her church family. She had many devoted friends that will feel her loss, (too many to list), but of those are two of her classmates and her lifelong friends of around 70 years, Louise Biggs (Harry) and Ona Wickline.
Betty was a cherished member of the Monroe County community and will leave behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. A proud graduate of Greenville High School, Class of 1957, Betty ranked third in her class, a testament to her intelligence and dedication from an early age. She was offered a job as a clerk-typist for the FBI in Washington, DC, but instead of taking the job she married the love of her life and lived on the family farm in Wikel, WV until her passing.
Throughout her life, Betty wore many hats with grace and diligence. She worked at Copeland General Store, sewed for the House of Fabrics, babysat for many Bd of Ed. teachers, and quilted many quilts for Quilts Unlimited in Charlottsville, Va and Lewisburg, WV. Her career at Samax Sewing Factory in Rich Creek, Va was marked by her rise from floor supervisor to manager, where she was respected for her leadership and kindness.
Betty's hands were rarely idle. She cooked many meals that not only fed her family, but many others were invited to sit around her table and enjoy her amazing cooking. She found joy in quilting, of which many of her quilts have been displayed at the WV State Fair, Pipestem and various WV Welcome centers. She also enjoyed sewing (she sewed numerous pieces of clothing as well as many cheerleading and baton uniforms), crocheting, cross-stitching, reading, and solving jigsaw puzzles-always taking great satisfaction in placing the final piece. Her love for Hallmark movies would find her watching the same ones' time and time again. Her famous custard and cream pies brought warmth to many hearts and homes. Known for her generous hugs and unwavering faith, Betty was a beacon of love and encouragement to all who knew her. This was proven by a recent Birthday Party that was held a week and half before her passing where over 100 people came by in person to wish her a Happy 86th Birthday.
Her devotion to music and worship was profound. Betty played piano for over 70 years across several churches: 25 years at the Lindside Methodist Church, 35 years at the Greenville Methodist Church, 12 years at the Wikel Community Church and she served as a fill in for the Rock Camp Baptist Church. Her music was a source of comfort and inspiration to generations.
Betty Jo Comer's life was a beautiful quilt stitched together with compassion, faith, and service. She loved the Lord deeply and lived her life as a reflection of that love. She was dedicated to her family and friends and always showed up for the occasions. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
