Shirley (Cooper) Coleman Woody, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 20, 2025, in her hometown of Yukon, West Virginia.
Shirley was born November 16, 1942 in Slate Creek, VA a daughter of the late Joe and Lucy Baker Cooper. Shirley lived a life centered around family and service to others. She found deep fulfillment in spending time with her loved ones and caring for those around her. Her generous spirit was especially evident at Christmas, when she filled her beautifully decorated home with love, laughter, and the joy of family. Shirley also devoted much of her time to volunteering at The Good Shepherd Mission for those in need, helping those in need with kindness and compassion. She loved to travel and go on cruises, embracing the chance to see new places and make lasting memories. When spending time in the mountains she called home, Shirley found joy in nature, especially bird-watching, always making sure to keep an eye out for her favorite bright red cardinals.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Coleman; her parents, Joe and Lucy Cooper; and her siblings, Sherman Cooper, Thurman Cooper, and Maxie Burch.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Delores Coleman, Tammy (Rob) Breen, Gwendolyn (Brian) Nowak, and Shannon (Scott) Pendergrass. She was a proud grandmother to Brittany (Jeffrey) Kidwell, Daniel (Rocío) Breen and their baby on the way, Thomas Scott Bowers, Leah (Robert) Nowak Planek, Olivia (Jay) Phillips, Andrew (Isabella) Nowak, and Michael Nowak. She was also a beloved great-grandmother to Coleman and Kyleigh Cook. Shirley is survived by her siblings Ermel (Sid) Boyce, Ernie Cooper, Jean (Jennifer) Cooper, Josie (Donald) Woody, and Troy Cooper. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own, including Crystal Hughes and Amy Lynch, as well as countless other family members and friends whose lives she touched deeply.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o'clock, Sunday, October 26, 2025 with Pastor Stevie White officiating at the Flatwoods Church of Christ at 7032 Compton Mountain Road, Pilgrims Knob, VA. Buril will follow in the Mullins/Davis Cemetery on Compton Mountain.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday evening, October 25, 2025 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home, 13879 Rocket Boys Drive, War, WV. In lieu of flowers, Shirley's family asks that donations be made to the
Wounded Warrior Project, a cause close to her heart.
Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger is assisting the family with arrangements.
