William Guthrie Obituary

William Alan Guthrie, 93, of Ripplemead, Virginia, went home to his Savior on Friday, October 17, 2025. Born on May 3, 1932, Alan lived a full and meaningful life-one filled with faith, kindness, humor and love for both people and nature. He proudly served in the U. S. Air Force for four years and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. After his service, he earned a Masters Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI) and taught agriculture at Fort Chiswell High School. Later, he found his lifelong calling as a Wildlife Biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, where his deep respect for animals and the outdoors touched many lives. He was proudly recognized as a 60-year Masonic Veteran and was honored as a Wildlife Conservationist of the Year by the Virginia Wildlife Federation, the National Wildlife Federation, and Sears, Roebuck, and Company. Alan was a talented self-taught artist who expressed his love for nature through beautiful oil paintings of wildlife and landscapes. He also enjoyed woodworking, creating pieces that reflected his creativity and care. He had a special bond with animals especially his loyal dogs-each treated with the same love and gentleness he shared with everyone around him. After retirement, Alan enjoyed competing in golf tournaments and spending time at Castle Rock Golf Course-his favorite playground-where he often practiced his game, shared laughter with his golf buddies, and enjoyed the camaraderie of friends. Golf was one of his greatest joys, especially during the summer months. He also shared his faith by teaching Sunday School at Ripplemead Methodist Church before the pandemic, continuing to inspire others with his quiet wisdom and devotion. He is reunited in Heaven with his parents, William Arthur and Mary Hetherington Guthrie; his son, William Alan Guthrie; siblings, Ruth, Donald, and Barry; and his faithful companion, Lady-his "forever true love." Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife and best friend, Maria Teresa "Thez" Floresca Guthrie, who stood by his side with endless love and devotion; his sisters, Betsy and Norma; several nieces and nephews; and his cherished dog, Buddy. Alan's life was one of quiet strength, humor, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered for his gentle spirit, his art, and the love he shared so freely. The family will receive friends at a time of visitation on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in Kendall Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be conducted to honor the life Mr. Guthrie so well lived on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM in Kendall Funeral Home with Pastors Gary Poff and Pam Sutherland officiating. A message celebrating his contributions to friendship, science and wildlife will be presented by his friend and colleague, Steve Vinson; and songs presented by his dear friend, Aileen Magdayao Holloway. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Air Force and American Legion Posts 68, 311, and 145. Masonic Honors for his dedication and involvement with his Lodge will be presented by Castle Rock Masonic Lodge #334 A.F.&A.M. "Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your Lord." -Matthew 25:21. A guestbook is available to send condolences to the family by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com. The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to serve the Guthrie family. A message from your loving wife. You are my best friend, my Joker, my greatest gift and my everything. Thank you for loving me so deeply and for showing me what true kindness and faith look like. Even in pain, you always thought of me first. You will forever live in my heart until we meet again in Heaven. I love you always. Maria Teresa "Thez" Guthrie
