Barry C. Markel

Barry C. Markel, 55, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at 12:54 a.m. at Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Kay E. (Dennis) Markel, with whom he celebrated their 30th wedding anni versary April 14th. There will be no viewing. Following cremation at White Rose Crematorium, a memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 1st at Workinger-Semmel Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc., 849 E. Market St. Officiating will be Rev. Edward J. Devan, pastor emeritus of First St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod). Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow the service in Mt. Rose Cemetery. Mr. Markel was born July 4, 1947 in York. He was a son of Ruth (Althouse) Markel of York and the late Lawrence Markel. Mr. Markel was a correctional officer at the York County Prison for the past 13 years. Previously, he was produce manager with the former Food Fair, Pantry Pride and Pathmark for 20 years. He attended First St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of West York High School, Class of 1965. He was a member of the Twelfth Ward Independent Democratic Club, the Thirteenth Ward Political Club, the Rooster Social Club, White Rose V.F.W. Post # 556 and the American Red Cross. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one daughter, Janene L. Kurilla of Manchester; one son, Jason C. Markel of York; two granddaughters, Jamie and Jackie Kurilla; three brothers, Don Markel, David Markel and Jerry Markel, all of York; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First St. John's Lutheran Church, 140 W. King St., York, PA 17401 or to the American Heart Association, 2997 Cape Horn Rd., B-2, Red Lion, PA 17356.
