Chanh Chhum

York - Chanh Chhum, 48, died at 8:42 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. She was the wife of Chhayrong A. "Alex" Chhum.

Born April 1, 1970 in Laos, she was a daughter of Khamsone and Phouang Xapakdy. Mrs. Chhum was employed at the Dollar Tree Store and enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, and gardening. She was a wonderful, loving, and compassionate wife and mother.

In addition to her husband of 23 years and her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Savra S. Chhum and Jennifer Xapakdy; a son, Jonathan Chhum; three brothers, Kuei Xapakdy, Seuang Xapakdy, and Khamsouk Xapakdy; and a sister, Dina Washington.

Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at Connection Christian Church, 2901 Pleasant Valley Road, York, with Pastor Dennis Ray officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 4 p.m. Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 E. Market St., York, is assisting with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Connection Christian Church, 2901 Pleasant Valley Road, York, PA 17402.

Sometimes life is not fair. I feel so honored to have known you and call you neighbor. I still remember the time you rang the doorbell and you brought us zucchini bread. That was the first time I ever had it and it was so delicious.

I attended your memorial service and it was one of the most beautiful ones I witnessed. You are so loved and have such an amazing family.

Girl I keep thinking how unreal this is. I'm thinking of when u first came here to Pa and I got to take u around the school. We didn't understand each other's language but we communicated just fine and remaind friends ever since. Chanh was a genuinely kind, compassionate, and selfless person. The most loving and caring wife to Alex and a nurturing mother to Jenny, Savra, and Jonathan. Chanh was an amazing cook, and I was honored to have her teach me how to make spring rolls with peanut sauce. She made it look so effortless, and before we knew it, we probably made three dozen! Because of her wonderful teaching and effortlessness, I brazenly thought I could make several dozen by myself. Yet, it was so much work doing it without Chanh, and although my family loved them, I never dared to make them again. Well, it looks like I will have to make another attempt in honor of Chanhs selflessness and compassion for giving of herself to all she encountered. She truly had a gift of service and benevolence, which was a blessing to so many. What a beautiful legacy she leaves her family! I know her spirit and heart live on in each one of you. Family, my continual prayer and meditation is that God continues to sustain you and comfort you. I pray that you maintain the memories of Chanh in your hearts and that she abides within each of you as she now abides in Him.
