James Coleman Obituary

James M. Coleman

Stewartstown - James Mark Coleman, 75, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021. He was the devoted husband of Lynda Lee (Lundberg) Coleman and they celebrated 51 years of marriage in May of 2021. Born in Chicago, IL, Jim was the son of the late James Daniel and Matilda (Matic) Coleman.

Jim was a bit of a Renaissance man. He received a BA in History at Loyola University, New Orleans, a MS in Ecology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a PhD in Botany from the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he was also awarded the 1979 Austin Award in Recognition of Outstanding Research and Service in the Natural Sciences. After working at the NASA Kennedy Space Center as Director of Field Operations, responsible for environmental analysis of the Space Center, his interests and pursuits broadened to integrate his interests in history, art, climate, and child raising.

He wrote published articles in respected scientific journals on climate, wrote and published two books analyzing the art market, painted landscapes, buying and marketing antiques and paintings and consulted with others on the significance of history and the rapid cultural changes of our modern era. But he felt his greatest accomplishment, that which gave him the most satisfaction, was the raising and educating his two daughters. In his later life his mission was to encourage and support underprivileged individuals and families in Nicaragua. His belief was to take care of your family and to take care of others less fortunate than you, to raise them up financially, emotionally and spiritually.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Caitlan Coleman and Lavinia 'Clare' Ganhann and her husband, Michael, and a stepdaughter, Jo Ann Rotenberry and her husband, Dennis; 5 grandchildren, Najaeshi, Dhakwoen, and Ma'Idah Boyle, Joy Coleman, and Marcel Ganhann; and two sisters, Sharon Booth and Maryann Johnson and her husband, Dale.

There will be a public visitation on Thursday, July 22, at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown, from 7-9 p.m. There will be a Funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, PA 17349. He will be laid to rest in the adjoining church cemetery. HartensteinCares.com
