Martin Weaver Obituary

DILLSBURG Martin W. Weaver, 65, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2012. Born in Hanover on April 6, 1946, he was the son of the late Nelson and Florence (Trostle) Weaver. After an indifferent academic effort, he graduated from Dover High School in 1964. Following four years of service in the U.S. Navy, Marty's vocational odyssey careened like a loose electron from sales to entertainment (remember when the Tourist Inn became the Beaver Trap? That was Marty) to personal improvement. During his tempestuous ride through life, he became overly familiar with John Barleycorn and, after his second marriage failed, he joined AA and began 13 years of sobriety. Not long after he got sober he discovered his true vocation and became a self-taught furniture and cabinet maker, producing not only excellent colonial reproductions but beautiful cabinets, chairs, tables, desks, etc. in a variety of styles and woods. He also designed decks with custom pictures painted on them; grew, prepared and painted gourds; and produced other forms of art in a variety of mediums. He continued to produce his art for the rest of his life despite a third failed marriage and a long fall off the wagon. To the delight of his friends and family, he went back to AA and spent his last years in a state of sobriety. Many superlatives can be associated with Marty: excellent cook, generous host, relentless hunter and fisherman, gardener supreme, raconteur, the king of country colloquialisms and one of the most profane men who ever lived. All these talents will be dearly missed by his family and friends. However, the people that gave him the greatest pleasure in his life and his greatest pride were his children: daughter, Leah Plymire (Mark), and sons, Darren Weaver (Deb), Brandon Weaver (Angie) and Adam Weaver (Kim). He is also survived by three grandchildren; a great-grandchild on the way; his brother, Ed; and sister, Becky. He leaves a large and motley assortment of friends representing all levels of the social strata and every interesting but harmless form of social disturbance. He was preceded in death by a son, Chad Weaver, and a brother, Lavern Weaver. A memorial service for Marty will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday with a visitation from 5 to 6 p.m. at Emig Funeral Home, 47 N. Queen St., Dover. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Olson, a family friend. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, P.O. Box 459, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163; or American Cancer Society, 924-N Colonial Ave., York, PA 17403.

I went to school with Marty. We barely knew that the other existed. But, later in life, we got to know each other fairly well. Knowing Marty as well as I did, my guess Is that he wrote his own obituary. This sounds so much like him and he knew it was coming. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Brandon and Adam. As you know, your dad and I were great friends and kindred spirits. He was magnetic and had great charm, humor, sensitivity and was tough as nails. I have many fond memories that I often revisit - many including you two -fishing,eating,partying,laughing. I also have two beautiful desks Marty crafted that are used daily. Marty loved his family and was loved and will be missed by many. Ken Hoch, Sebago, Maine

A Dover High girl (underclassman) who remembers Marty Weaver as a pretty cool guy. I ran in to Marty at "The Blue Moon Cafe" in York, PA some years ago and we had a nice chat. He had this leather belt on that was covered with drips and smears of brightly colored paint. It was obviously his working belt naturally aged and worn and so beautiful that I offered to purchased it right then and there. He just laughed and said this belt saw me through many projects, it's not going anywhere....wish I had it now.
God Bless Marty he was a amazing craftsman.

I am sorry to see Cancer got another good soul....knew Marty, friends and family since high school. Later we reconnected in the rooms of recovery and Marty stopped by in Fl on his way to the Keys to sell handmade bongo drums. I witnessed Marty making a roll top desk from start to finish without a nail in it - what a gifted artist/carpenter. And a gifted cook, he would call it "field and stream" instead of "surf and turf" and everything would come out at the same time perfect.
Love to his children and failed marriages (all good women)and family especially Becky and Ed. Keep remembering the good times and his laughter.

I am sure he is chairing a meeting with Charlie B.

Marty was such a wonderful person to have known. His words of wisdom and his ever-present sense of humor meant more to me then words can say. I will miss his cheery smile and warmth. He was an "artist" in every sense of the word and painted meaning into so many people's lives. My sincerest condolences to his family whom he deeply loved.

Martin is a friend for many years. He will be sorely missed. Martin accompanied me on a trip to the Middle East. We went to Jordan, swam in the dead sea and rode by horse to the ancient city of Petra.
Martin had many talents. Woodworking was just one of them. I already miss him. May he rest in peace.

Darren-----I was so sorry to hear of Marty's passing. He was a delightful man and perhaps one of the most unique people I have ever met. I was so proud of the beautiful deck he designed , helped build and painted at my former residence in Royale Manor. The last time I saw him was the day you returned from one of your many successful hunts and I was at his place. He was at peace with his restless past. You and Deb are in my prayers

Marty was an amazing person with the biggest heart, sense of humor and wisdom! He was a great friend to my mother who passed away in September 2010! When she was sick he would call her everyday and that meant more to her than he ever realized! I learned a lot from Marty and he would ALWAYS know what to say to make everything all right! I'm heartbroken that he had to leave us too soon but I know that him and my mom are enjoying coffee and icecream right now! I am forever grateful that I had him in my life 2 and a half years and will miss him so much! Marty I love you and will never forget you!
To his family: He loved you all so much and he talked about you all often! May you be blessed with peace, comfort and wonderful memories during this time!

I did not know Marty but enjoyed reading about him here. In life, we probably would have been good friends. He sounds clever, creative, 'earthy' and true-spoken. May God grant him a holy rest and let His perpetual light shine upon him. My condolences to family and friends.
