David Cooper Obituary

David Frank Cooper, 64, a Justice of the Peace since 2002, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009, in Yuma. He was born October 18, 1945, in Long Beach, California.
David moved to Yuma with his family in 1959 and entered Kofa High School as a freshman that year, the first year the school was open. He graduated from Kofa, from the University of Arizona, and from the University of Arizona law school. Before law school David worked for IBM for several years in Los Angeles, Hartford, and Boston. He was also a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He practiced law in Tucson and later ran a private practice in Yuma until 2002, when he was first appointed, and later elected, Justice of the Peace.
David was an avid outdoorsman. He ran marathons and biked for many years. His roots in Yuma were very deep; his father was born here, into a family that homesteaded property southeast of 8th Street and Somerton Avenue before Arizona became a state.
David is survived by his father, Frank, and his stepmother, Pat, both of Yuma; by his sister, Ann Cooper, of New York; by his daughter, Deidra Cooper, of San Diego, CA.; and by his stepson, Don West, of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by numerous cousins descended from the Cooper homesteaders of Yuma, as well as cousins from his mother's side of the family, who were early settlers in northern Arizona.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Martha.
A memorial mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 505 S. Avenue B, at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2009.
The family asks that donations in David's memory be made to Amberly's Place, 1350 W. Colorado St., Yuma, Az. 85364, or Hospice of Yuma, 1824 S. 8th Ave., Yuma, Az. 85364, or Assistance League of Yuma, 1054 S. 4th Ave., Yuma, Az 85364.

Dave and I were together for a year or two in Boston in the early 70's. I am flooded with memories of our time together in Back Bay Boston. Dave on Marlboro St and I was on Commonwealth Ave, or always together. Dave was building a career with an IBM subsidiary. Dave was a wonderful man, full of fun and exploration. We were either in Cambridge, skiing, enjoying fantastic Boston together. So sad for him to has passed so early in his life.

I knew Cooper in the late 70's and early 80's, and we ran a relay from Tecate to Ensenada in a day on more than one occasion. David was also a ski instructor and always brought joy and a zest for life to all. David was definitely a free spirt, and may his spirit continue to soar as we remember him in our hearts. Peace to his family.

My condolences to Frank and Pat and the entire Cooper family. I spent 16 years as David's secretary and they were never dull. Between our office parties, lunches at Lute's Casino that lasted all afternoon, or discussing business over a glass of wine, they were some of the most enjoyable and memorable years of my life. Rest in peace, David. We will miss you.

Words cannot express our sadness over "Coops" passing. I hope my words are comforting. He was truly a one of a kind guy. He was, as someone else said, someone you met once that absolutely made you feel like an old friend. His zest for life is something to be admired, remembered and cherished. I know you know what I am talking about. We are all at at a loss. Please take comfort in knowing that he IS loved by many good friends and that our thoughts are with his family. In the end....i hope we are smiling for having known him..i know we are and that is the way he would want it. God Bless.

I also met Cooper back in the 70's. I can't begin to tell all the funny happy memories I have of him. The infamous office Christmas parties were the best. As Jacquie said, the world will be less bright. He was a free spirit. I, as many others, will miss him very much. We love you Cooper!!
