Margit Gaines Obituary
November 24, 1948 - January 15, 2023
Margit G Gaines, longtime Yuma resident, passed away on January 15, 2023, following a short hospital stay. Margit was the first-born child of six to Thomas and Lisa Lottes-Garrett. Born in Murnau, Germany, she immigrated to America in 1954 and became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 1970.
On July 9, 1966, Margit married her childhood sweetheart, David C Gaines, an active-duty Marine. The next twenty-four years, her life was as supportive military spouse. Life was adventurous as duty sent the family coast to coast and two tours to Okinawa Japan. U.S. Duty locations included California, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York and Arizona with a short stint in Tennessee. Following military retirement, the family remained in Yuma and Bullhead City for the next 24 years.
Margit had many interests. She was an avid reader, needlework of various kinds, collecting knick knacks and active in youth sports as the kids grew up. Margit loved animals of all kinds but was partial to dogs. For a number of years, she was actively involved in K-9 Flyball, which was a labor of love. She loved politics and served several years on the Yuma County Republican Women's Club board of directors.
Margit is survived by her husband of 56 plus years, David; son, Eric and wife Stephanie of Yuma: son, Edward and wife Theresa in Lusby, MD; daughter, Lisa of Yuma; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, also brothers, Curt, Mike and wife Liz, David and Steven and wife Rhonda Garrett; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cindy and Don Whitford, Patrick McKeen, Jeanne Brownson, Charlene Arnold, Suzy Hall, Debbie and Tom Johns, Jeff and Donna Gaines, Tony Gaines and Steven and Sonya Gaines.
A memorial service for Margit will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Morningside Southern Baptist Church, 2900 South 8th Avenue, Yuma, AZ. Pastor Marion Kidwell will preside. A reception and celebration of Life will follow at the sanctuary.
Final arrangements were handled by Sunset Vista Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Yuma County Humane Society.
