Joan Woolf Obituary

Joan Shirley (Sheets) Woolf

NORWICH: Joan Shirley (Sheets) Woolf, 84, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 23rd at the Beckett House, New Concord, Ohio.

She was born October 4, 1930 in Coolville, Ohio to W. Wilfred and Mary Louise Sheets. She married Charles Mack Woolf on July 28, 1951, and they recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Woolf was a graduate of Nelsonville, Ohio High School in 1948 and Mount Carmel School of Nursing in 1951. She received a BS from Kent State University in 1960 and a Master Degree in 1970 from Ohio State University.

Joan was an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Ohio University - Zanesville. Joan was a shining example for the profession of nursing. She not only touched the lives of numerous patients but also guided the path of countless nursing students. She loved engaging with her students and they in turn relished their instruction with her. Her love of teaching is still a legacy to the medical community in and around Zanesville.

Joan retired in 1986 from OUZ and during her early retirement years enjoyed traveling with Charles throughout the country. Together they shared their appreciation for Bluegrass, Country and Southern Gospel music. They participated in many square dances in outfits proudly sewn by Joan. They settled in Norwich, Ohio in June 2001.

She will be remembered most for her love of family and friends, enjoyment of conversation, her many photos, and a radiant smile. Joan was passionate about gardening, home canning and preserving. She was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Ohio, Arkansas, Louisiana and most recently the College Drive Presbyterian Church in New Concord, Ohio. She enjoyed worshipping weekly, was active in the Presbyterian Women's Organization, served as Sunday School Teacher and worked in the Youth Group Program. She had a deep personal faith that brought her peace and comfort knowing that death was not the end. She was truly blessed with a large family and numerous friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Wilfred and Mary Sheets; brothers Johnny and Paul Sheets; and sisters Janet (Sheets) Troyan Jane (Sheets) LeMay.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Woolf of Norwich Ohio; daughter Charla (Richard) Calderhead of New Concord, OH, son Jim (Cindy Moorehead) Woolf of Tipton, IN, daughter Cathy (Jeff) Whitehair of Bolivar, OH, and son David (Faye Cochran) Woolf of Chapel Hill, NC.; The loves of her life were also her nine grandchildren, Bryan (Kristeen) Calderhead, Becky (Keith) Hamilton, Eric (Brittany) Woolf, Dustin Whitehair, Ryan (Mindy) Woolf, Cortney Whitehair, Kevin (Mary) Calderhead, Micah Woolf, Eliza Woolf and 14 great grandchildren; also surviving are brother David Sheets of Groveland, FL, brother Danny Sheets of New Plymouth, OH and sister Judy (Sheets) Bainter of Logan, OH; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends and Family may attend calling hours for Joan on Saturday, September 26th, at the College Drive Presbyterian Church, 2 W High St, New Concord, OH from 10-11AM, with services starting sharply at 11AM. Pastor Anne Weirich will officiate. Cremation will follow services, and burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The College Drive Presbyterian Food Pantry, 2 W High St, New Concord, OH 43762. Farus Funeral Home of New Concord will be assisting with services.

Charla-I recently met you while you took care of my son and his wife during the birth of my first grandchild"Kathleen".I see where your mother passed down her nursing skills and knowledge. Your kindness and professionalism during that exciting and stressful time was much appreciated. You did your mother proud. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Charla and family,
So very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of having your Mother as my Pediatric and OB nursing instructor as well as working with her after graduation. I learned so much from her not only professionally, but personally. May God's love and your memories comfort you during this difficult time.
