Hill, Matthew Bowen
35, Mesa, AZ died January 24, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Matt was born February 7, 1973 to Sheril and Ann Hill in Downey, CA, the youngest of five children. He graduated from Mountain View High School in Mesa, AZ, class of 1991. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dear Hills: I only found out today of the passing of my friend Matt. We were in Young Men together for many years and he is so unique and fun. A wonderful soul and heart as large as the world and smile that would make one be glad you were with him. I saw him last at his reception with his sweet wife. I am glad to claim Matt as my friend. I am so glad that we will always be friends forever. I love Matt and all he has given me. Dan Boyle and family

As a former SCC staffer, I had the pleasure of knowing Matt Hill and appreciating his creativity and skill. I am terribly saddened for the tremedous loss his wife and family must endure.

I served with Matt in Natchez, MS. At that time I was known as Elder Anderson. We had fun and pain riding up and down those hills on our bikes. Matt and I would talk about music, movies and girls. He always got annoyed by Queen fans who only knew Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites the Dust and We Will Rock You. We would take little road trips which, honestly, got us into some trouble. What a great time.

One night while he was brushing his teeth I snuck into his bed and slid against the wall. It was dark. When he climbed into his bed I grabbed him and shouted and absolutely scared the hell out of him. We laughed for about 15 minutes afterward.

To his wife and family I offer my sincere condolences. He was fun, happy and full of life. He was a fun mission companion and he knew his scriptures. He would sing his unofficial school song from high school.

"We're rich we show it, we're mormon we know it"

RIP, Matt. I'll listen to obscure Queen songs today and think of you.

I was one of Matt's mission companions. We served together in Metairie, LA. for a few months. I had heard he was sick an am shocked and saddened by his passing. He was a good companion.

Matt was larger-than-life. He made his corner of the writing lab at SCC a cheerful, intelligent place. When I had trouble yesterday with a mal-functioning classroom computer, I rushed there...and then waited while the tech desk across campus was called. I said to the lady at the center: "Well, I guess we all know nobody can replace Matt." With tears in our eyes, we nodded. He was beloved. He will be deeply missed.

I knew Matt well in high school. I believe we sat next to each other in a few classes. I remember him always being a happy, smiling face and a good friend to everyone. He was also very funny and very bright. He made any class a little more interesting. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It was my privilege to teach Matt in seminary at Poston Jr High. He was a wonderful student. He was good friends with our daughter Kelly. Matt was and is an outstanding man.
We are currently serving a mission at Southern Virginia University Institute of Religion. We want to express our love to the family.

I did not even know Matt, however after reading about him and his talents and seeing his beaming smile, I had a feeling I would have liked him. I'm sure he will be greatly missed, but his sprit lives on forever.

Dear Sheril, Ann, Tracy, Christoper, Nick, Katie, Alex and the rest of the Hill family,

I am deeply sorry about Matt's death. I will never forget the day in conservatory when we were playing the "Get the chair" game. After a several scenes with basically the same content, Matt came running in and shouted (in his best Marvin the Matian voice), "Wait! I need that for my proton GeneratOR." The entire room laughed and laughed.

Matt was a wonderful actor, a loyal friend and a techno genius. The world lost a bright light when Matt passed.

I can't make it to his services, but my heart is with all of you.

All my love,
L'Rae Whipple
