Lee Barry Obituary

Two bicyclists participating in a cross-country ride to raise money for brain injuries died Sunday after a wreck with a van in Lancaster County.

Lee Anne Barry, founder of The B.I.G. Ride, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and died around 6 p.m., said her husband, Ben Barry of Waxhaw. She was 43.

Thomas Hoskins, 49, of Columbia, S.C., died at the scene of the wreck, which happened around 2:15 p.m. on U.S. 521 about 11 miles north of Lancaster, the S.C. Highway Patrol said. The crash remains under investigation.

According to The B.I.G. Ride's Web site, Barry was hit by a car when she was 5 and 1/2 years old. She laid in a coma for months, then had to relearn how to walk and talk. At age 15, she convinced doctors to let her undergo a new brain surgery that helped her regain much of her physical strength and agility.

Ben and Lee Anne Barry started their cross-country treks in 2001. This year's trip began Aug. 28 in Seattle.

On Sunday, the group started the last leg of the ride in Columbia. Ben Barry said his wife, their 15-year-old son and Hoskins were riding toward Waxhaw when the accident occurred. The group had planned to meet a police escort, then complete the ride to Charlotte.

Ben Barry had driven ahead to Waxhaw in a van, then was riding back on his bike to meet the group.

I just found out about Lee Anne (Lori Genix in our neighborhood). I remember the accident for she had just left her home town of Jackson Michigan. I didn't recognize her new name. She hung out at the Gillett's Lake park with us and would jog often. What a fun person. You will be missed. The Gillett's lake crew.

Ben I start thinking about this time of year I would be receiving a call from you and Lee Anne and discussing your route and if you would be traveling through our area. Lee Anne's loss is still a large void in Beth and my life in cycling. Still hoping we can somehow stay in touch. We have moved to Arkansas. You can contact us at [email protected]. Craig and Beth

I do not know you, but was sadden to hear of your very difficult loss. My husband and I love biking and we were listening to David on the Fred Cast and Lee Anne's story touched our hearts and left us with tears for all of you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, we hope that you are guided through this difficult time and find peace. Know words can express your loss, Lee Anne sounded like a wonderful, heartfilled woman; someone who I would want to ride and try to keep up with.

We are deeply saddened by the news of Lori's (Lee Anne's)death. She has been very close to our family since she was a small child. In fact, we all considered Lori and her brothers and sisters a part of our family. Our sympathy and prayers go out to them, and Ben and Christian. Lori was an amazing person. She always wore a brilliant smile. She loved every minute of every day, and everyone. She was such an optimist, always finding the good in everything. Lori and her family will always remain in the hearts and memories of "The Hicks Family".

I was so sad to hear of Lee Anne and Tom's accident. They will both be terribly missed. I had the opportunity to meet them both along with your entire family at the first reception held at BellSouth a few years ago. The Pioneers would donate money to help their cause. The one thing I always remembered about Lee Anne was her smile. She never complained about the long trip she just made, she just kept smiling.
Always remember what an impact she made on so many people while she was here, and what a tremendous journey she set out to accomplish to help others.
God Bless

Although I wasn't home when you, Lee Anne, and Tom stopped by on your way to Florida in 2005, I heard nothing but wonderful things from my husband. He was so glad that you all stopped. I only wish I had been here to meet Lee Anne myself. Tom was a good friend to us and we were fortunate that he stayed with us earlier this month when he took the trip to Florida solo this year. He talked of meeting you for the final leg of this years B.I.G. ride, he was so excited. Even though we are saddened and hurt by their loss, the legacy they left behind is testimony to their love of life and their faith in God. Know that we will be in contact and hope we might be able to help continue the work Lee Anne and Tom started on this earth. Our prayers are with you always.

I have not seen Lori in many years, since I babysat her when she was very young. I did see her when she was staying with her father in Jackson back around 1985. She was something then and from all I hear from my sister & brother;she had truely grown into an utstanding woman. I would of really liked to of seen Lori when she home in Jackson recently but didn't get the chance. My thoughts are with you and your Son in these sad and trying times...May God Bless you and help through the pain.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news about Lee Anne. I had such a wonderful time working with her in the tech booth at Church at Charlotte. She was an invaluable part of the weekly production team as well as our Christmas production staff.

Lee Anne's gifts and talents were exceptional and given to others with complete love and abandon. She was a role model for us all. Would that each of us develop the strength, fortitude, character and gentleness that Lee Anne so perfectly displayed throughout her life.

Please know that my love and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

To Lee Anne's family and friends,

I'm saddened by the passing of Lee Anne and Tom, as all cyclists are.

Though I did not know either Lee Anne or Tom, Lee Anne came through Grand Rapids MI this year on her cross country ride, and stopped in at a local school to discuss the need for all children to wear helmets while riding, to protect them from injury. This was covered by local TV stations.

As a volunteer of the GR Safe Kids Coalition, a part of their cycling team, we distribute helmets free to area children, and insure they fit properly. I deeply respect the work Lee Anne was doing, to help educate kids nation wide.

As a member of the Ride of Silence, a ride that takes place worldwide, (274 in 2007, over 200 in the USA) to remember and honor our friends and family who've been injured or killed by motorist while riding, that fully endorses the Share the Road program, in hopes of educating motorists that we have the same rights, to be cautious/careful, and to please Share the Road with us....

I ask you all to consider joining the May 21st 2008, at 7 PM, Ride of Silence to honor and remember Lee Anne and Tom, whether you ride in Charlotte NC (a Ride held in 2007), in Jackson MI, her home town (a Ride held in 2007), or any other city across the U.S. Please visit the website below for 2007 locations.

If you wish to organize a Ride of Silence in your community, but are unsure of how to do so, or would like additional information, please feel free contact me.

May their ideals and memories live on,

Sincerely,

Mark Hagar

Dear Ben,
I am deeply saddened by your loss and the loss we share as friends and community. The years I have known you and Lee Anne seem so brief. Yet how rich, purposeful, and full you made them as a couple! Without doubt, God brought you both together at just the right time. Through your love and support as a husband and your mutual willingness to follow God's calling for your lives, much has been accomplished for His kingdom, for our community, and for those challenged by brain injuries. How humbling it is for me to know Lee Anne's story, to have witnessed God's redemptive power in her life, and to have been able to claim you both as friends. May God comfort both you and Christian on your continued journies.

To the family and friends of Lee Anne:

Eventhough I don't know you, I am heart-broken over your great loss. Me, my 11 year old son and his friends were on our way to the skate park in Waxhaw on Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m., when we came up on the horrific accident. Police nor the abulance had arrived. Members from Steele Hill AME Zion Church were with Lee Ann trying to help and comfort her. I wanted so desperately to stop, but my son and his friends were visibly upset so I decided it was best to go on. I told the boys that we needed to pray for the cyclists and their families. When I heard that Lee Anne (and Tom) didn't survive, I was devasted for you and his family. Please know that you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days, weeks, and months. All my love and sympathy goes out to you at this difficult time.

October 22, 2007

Dear Ben and Christian,
You're probably still in shock and it may not seem real sometimes that Lee Anne is gone. She will always live in your minds and hearts. Grieving takes a while, and you will still be grieving when it seems the rest of the world has moved on. It's incredible how many lives you and Lee Anne touched across the country, people you met, and many who never met you and Lee Anne. That is an incredible testimony in itself of how God has used you and Lee Anne. What a privilege to have known her and you. I wish that I hadn't waited to ask Lee Anne more about her testimony and life. She had a willingness to serve, and I was a recipient of that when she volunteered to stay part of the time with me in the hospital after we lost Sean. I am so very glad to have been a witness to her testimony and her life. Losing a loved one is so very hard. A card we received after losing Sean said that life is so tender, and fragile, and precious. I believe that is true and we have to live every moment to the fullest. I believe that Lee Anne lived that way and had few regrets. I pray that you and Christian will live the rest of your lives that way. The road ahead of you isn't easy, but God has promised to sustain us as we walk through it and suffer as Christ suffered. It will take time, your hearts won't forget, but they will heal. It is obvious from the outpourings from people across the country and here that Lee Anne was blessed and loved. Know that you and Christian are, too, and that many, many people are lifting you up in prayer.

Christian,
Your Mom is one of which you can surely be proud; a wonderful woman without a doubt. When I hear her name, the only thing that comes to my mind are good thoughts, her smile, her sweet spirit, and the way she has dedicated her life to others. You couldn't ask for a better mom or example in which to pattern your life. I trust you will hold each memory close to your heart as I know this must be so hard for you. She has been on my mind all day... and that has been hard enough for me! If I may share a "sweet" memory of your mom... the day she helped me make cotton candy for Forest Hill Troop 112 concession booth (festival). We were both covered head to toe in blue and pink fluff and enjoyed every minute of our time together, laughing (and choking on sugar). She didn't mind helping with such a messy task and wouldn't leave until we could leave together. I am thankful to have had her friendship and her memory is dear to me. Please know I am thinking of YOU and am sending you a BIG "mom" HUG that you can use any time you need it. Love to you .... make your mom proud ...

As a co-rider of Lee Anne's on the Face of America, I came to know her as a wonderful person, dedicated cyclist with an infectious attitude of determination, love and joy. She was thrilled with every pedal stroke and what the next turn would bring.

My favorite memory of Lee Anne is after the completion of her first
Century - Bob Connors and I convinced her that a tradition was to throw the rider into the closest pool. She screamed and wiggled while we carried her by feet and hands to the pool. As we got closer, she stopped, smiled and said. "throw me in the deep end!", then resumed the screaming and wiggling!
What a character!

Dear Ben,
It is with a heavy heart I write this letter.
I rode with Lee Anne and World Team Sports (W.T.S.) to St. Louis and she became like a daughter to me on that ride.
The joy that she got from finishing her first century ride was very special to share with her. I will always remember the hard work she put into every mile she rode.
My prayers are with you and Christian in your time of sorrow.
Lee Anne will not be forgotten.

To Ben and Christian

Lee Anne thanked me for the prayer we had together here two weeks ago. She testified to her faith in Christ many times when I have talked to her and we can be sure she is now at home with Him in heaven. Losing a wife and mother is very hard. Thanks to Jesus, we have His promise that we will meet again in heaven.

The members of the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association send our regrets to Ben and Lee Ann's family. It seems like yesterday Lee Anne was receiving a new green helmet from us (2001). We will miss Lee Anne and all that she did to bring recognition to brain injury survivors and awareness to each community that she visited.

My condolences are with the Barry Family. My (now) 16 year old brother was hit head on by a vehicle when riding his bike at the age of 9 years old causing him to be in a coma for several months and caused severe brain damage. It has changed my family and him. But it has not changed his spirit. Although he is unable to walk, talk, and do all the things a normal 16 year old does. We believe that he will "come back to us" when we least expect it. Joshua was not wearing a helmet but speed was definitely a factor. Since the accident occurred. Children at Play signs have been posted and speed limit signs as well. Josh is still going strong; attending school everyday. Its a blessing just to see him smile.

Ben and Christian,
Please know that you are being thought of and are in the prayers of Tennesseans who have all been touched by your family. It was so good to have Ben and Lee Anne here just two weeks ago. I had no idea how lucky I was to have her company at that time. I feel honored to have known Lee Anne and the great work that she has done.
Thank you Lee Anne for raising awareness and education about brain injury and for sharing it with so many people. Others simply wouldn't have done so much, but you have and it will go on to help so many people. It is a beautiful and courageous, admirable and giving life that you have shared with everyone.
With Love, Jennifer

To my cousin Lori (Lee Anne): Although we have not seen each other for many years, I know our bond as family is true. I apologize for having written so late, but life kind of got in the way. I have missed you, and Tracy and Louie and Joe very much. We always had fun when we were together. One of the things I love about you is your sweet spirit. Always loving, always trusting. The Lord has taken you in his arms and brought you to your heavenly home. Tell Aunt Norma and Uncle Lou I miss them too.
I love you.

To Ben and Christian: My deepest sympathies for the loss of your most precious wife and mother. Lee Anne was an exceptional human being. She’s overcome so many obstacles in her life. My you find peace and solace during this most tragic time.

With Much Love

Ben & Christian, meeting Le Anne for the first time was probably one the most important times in my life. She was an inspiration to Jennifer, the necklace she gave Le Anne was meant as a gift of love. We will never forget her. They say you know how successful you are through your friends, Le Anne was the most succesful person I knew. We may thank God for her.

Cuz Bennie: I stepped over and hugged Lee Anne while you gave the blessing before dinner at your Dad's (my Uncle John's) house just 13 short days ago. We are so lucky the Ride came through Chattanooga and we got to see Lee Anne smile all evening long. I am so so sorry for this heartbreaking loss.

Dear Barry Family,

I was a visitor to the area this past weekend for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer held in Charlotte. I just happened to be reading the online version of the Charlotte Observer and learned of this terrible accident that occurred this same weekend.

The story of Lee Anne strikes me to the core. I am a long time cyclist and was just cycling through North Carolina and Virginia on a fundraising tour for the Children's Miracle Network, just some 4 weeks earlier.

My travel buddy, Dave Weigel, of www.RideForMiracles.com, and I were both old time classmates and riding buddies returning to the touring road after a 20 year, or so, hiatus. We were shocked by the severity of the roadways for bicyclists these days.

The tragedy of Lee Anne's death is a call to me to pick up efforts to make pedestrian and bicycle access a part of every new roadway project in America.

Please accept my sincere condolences.
