Perry Bass Obituary
The death of Bass brings a closing chapter to one of the most colorful, well-known and generous personalities in Fort Worth history.
He represented a Texas of old, working from the 1930s to the 1950s with his maverick uncle, famed wildcatter Sid W. Richardson, then ushered in the prowess of today’s financial world by guiding his four sons, each proven fortune-builders in their own right — equalled by few.
Bass contributed to Little League teams and presidential campaigns, helped rebuild a deteriorating downtown Fort Worth into an urban center of critical acclaim, and pumped millions into museums and music halls.
A former chairman of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, Bass was described as one of the “most conscientious” conservationists in the state, and he championed a law that helped preserve the population of redfish and spotted seatrout in the Texas’ coastal waters.
He also helped retarded children who lived near his oil fields.
Bass’ death stunned members of the community and the state who had grown accustomed to his resiliency.
“Perry R. Bass was one of a handful of Fort Worth’s greatest citizens, and his death is an irreplaceable loss to the community and to the state,” said attorney Dee Kelly, the oilman’s longtime lawyer and friend.
“He and Nancy Lee and their sons have done so much to make the lives of all Texans better, especially for those of us who live in Fort Worth,” Kelly said.
Bass was a “tower of strength for this region,” according to former Tarrant County Judge Tom Vandergriff, who went “the extra mile for our community, and challenged us to attempt to follow in his footsteps.”

I was sad to learn of the death of one of Fort Worths finest citizens. We used to live next door and when my black lab Gretta escaped we could always find her at the Bass' with a full tummy, thanks to Perry. All of us owe a lot to him, not the least of which is the legacy of his sons. A fine family as well, my warmest thoughts are with you.

As I read the many entries in this guest book, it is quite evident that Mr. Bass touched many lives in a very positive manner.
I have worked for Mr. Bass and his family several times throughout the past twenty years. Those times involving Mr. Bass personally, it readily became quite clear that he was not only passionate, but compassionate and a man of integrity.
He has helped to provide Ft. Worth with a new direction. Not only one of "where the west begins", but a leader in the progression of where Ft. Worth's future is headed.
He will be missed not only by his beloved family, but those whose lives he touched both directly and indirectly. His legacy will be permanently embedded in our community.

Many years ago while at the home of a Bass brother, I observed Perry Bass casting his fly rod across the reflection pond at the residence. He greeted me and I asked him what kind of luck he was having. He smiled and said he wasn't fishing but practicing. He then began teaching me how to cast and whip the fly rod line to his targeted areas. I spent about 30 minutes with him and will never forget what he taught me or forget the happy look in his eyes as he was sharing his love of fly fishing.

I did not know Mr. Bass. I just knew the name but I am one of so many that enjoy the fruits of his generosity here in Fort Worth. I live downtown and know that without his vision and philanthropic spirit that would never have been an option.
