Jerry Falwell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 15, 2007.
LYNCHBURG, Virginia (AP) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, known both for his scathing comments linking the Sept. 11 attacks to homosexuality and liberals and for shaping the conservative Christian right into a major force in U.S. politics during the Reagan years, died Tuesday. He was at 73.

Falwell was discovered without a pulse in his office at Liberty University and pronounced dead at a hospital an hour later. Dr. Carl Moore, Falwell's physician, said he had a heart condition and presumably died of a heart rhythm abnormality.

Driven into politics by the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that established the right to an abortion, Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979. One of the conservative lobbying group's greatest triumphs came just a year later, when Ronald Reagan was elected president.

Falwell credited the Moral Majority with getting millions of conservative voters registered, aiding in Reagan's victory and giving Republicans control of the Senate.

"I shudder to think where the country would be right now if the religious right had not evolved," he said when he stepped down as Moral Majority president in 1987.

Fellow TV evangelist Pat Robertson, himself a one-time Republican candidate for president, declared Falwell "a tower of strength on many of the moral issues which have confronted our nation."

The rise of Christian conservatism - and the Moral Majority's full-throated condemnation of homosexuality, abortion and pornography - made Falwell perhaps the most recognizable figure on the evangelical right, and one of the most controversial ones, too.

Over the years, Falwell waged a landmark libel case against Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt over a raunchy parody ad, and created a furor in 1999 when one of his publications suggested that the purse-carrying "Teletubbies" character Tinky Winky was gay.

Matt Foreman, executive director of National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, extended condolences to those close to Falwell, but added: "Unfortunately, we will always remember him as a founder and leader of America's anti-gay industry, someone who exacerbated the nation's appalling response to the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic, someone who demonized and vilified us for political gain and someone who used religion to divide rather than unite our nation."

The 1980s marked the religious conservative movement's high-water mark. In more recent years, Falwell had become a problematic figure for the Republican. His remarks a few days after Sept. 11, 2001, essentially blaming feminists, gays and liberals for bringing on the terrorist attacks drew a rebuke from the White House, and he apologized.

Falwell's declining political star seemed apparent when he quietly led in and out of the Republican Party's 2004 national convention. Just four years earlier, he was invited to pray from the rostrum.

The big, blue-eyed preacher with a booming voice started a fundamentalist church in an abandoned bottling plant in Lynchburg in 1956 with just 35 members. He built it into a religious empire that included the 22,000-member Thomas Road Baptist Church, the "Old Time Gospel Hour" carried on TV stations around the country and 7,700-student Liberty University, which Falwell founded in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College.

From his living room, he broadcast his message of salvation and raised the donations that helped his ministry grow.

"He was one of the first to come up with ways to use television to expand his ministry," said Robert Alley, a retired University of Richmond religion professor who studied and criticized Falwell's career.

Falwell had once opposed mixing preaching with politics, but changed his views. The Moral Majority grew to 6.5 million members and raised $69 million (euro51 million) as it supported conservative politicians and railed against abortion, homosexuality, pornography and bans on school prayer.

Falwell became the face of the religious right, appearing on national magazine covers and on talk shows. In 1983, U.S. News & World Report named him one of 25 most influential people in America.

"Jerry's passions and convictions changed the course of our country for the better over the last 20 years," said James Dobson, founder of the conservative Christian Focus on the Family ministry. "It was Jerry who led an entire wing of Christianity, the fundamentalist wing, away from isolation and into a direct confrontation with the culture."

"Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country," said Sen. John McCain, a Republican presidential contender who during the 2000 primaries referred to Falwell and Robertson as "agents of intolerance." McCain has since distanced himself from those comments.

In 1984, Falwell sued Hustler for $45 million (euro33 million), charging that he was libeled by an liquor-ad parody that quoted him as saying he lost his virginity to his mother in an outhouse. But a federal jury found he was not libeled and awarded him $200,000 (euro147,732) for emotional distress.

The verdict was overturned in a landmark 1988 U.S. Supreme Court decision that held that even pornographic spoofs about a public figure enjoy constitutional protection.

With Falwell's high profile came frequent criticism, even from fellow ministers. The Rev. Billy Graham once rebuked him for political sermonizing on "non-moral issues."

Falwell quit the Moral Majority in 1987, saying he was tired of being "a lightning rod" and wanted to devote his time to his ministry and Liberty University. But he remained outspoken and continued to draw criticism for his remarks.

In 1999, he told an evangelical conference that the Antichrist was a male Jew who was probably already alive. Falwell later apologized for the remark but not for holding the belief.

Falwell was re-energized after family values proved important in the 2004 presidential election. He formed the Faith and Values Coalition as the "21st Century resurrection of the Moral Majority," to seek anti-abortion judges, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and more conservative elected officials.

In 1987, Falwell took over the PTL (Praise the Lord) ministry in South Carolina after the Rev. Jim Bakker got caught in a sex and money scandal. Falwell slid fully clothed down a theme park water slide after donors met his fundraising goal to help rescue the rival ministry. He gave it up seven months later after learning the depth of PTL's financial problems.

Largely because of the sex scandals involving Bakker and fellow evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, donations to Falwell's ministry dropped from $135 million (euro100 million) in 1986 to less than $100 million (euro74 million) the following year. Hundreds of workers were laid off and viewers of his television show dwindled.

Liberty University was $73 million (euro54 million) in debt and on the verge of bankruptcy, and his "Old Time Gospel Hour" was $16 million (euro11.8 million) in debt. By the mid-1990s, two local businessmen with long ties to Falwell began overseeing the finances and helped get companies to forgive debts or write them off.

Falwell dreamed that Liberty would grow to 50,000 students and be to fundamentalist Christians what Notre Dame is to Roman Catholics and Brigham Young University is to Mormons.

Falwell's father and his grandfather were militant atheists, he wrote in his autobiography. He said his father made a fortune off his businesses - including bootlegging during Prohibition.

As a student, Falwell was a star athlete and a prankster who was barred from giving his high school valedictorian's speech after he was caught using counterfeit lunch tickets.

He ran with a gang of juvenile delinquents before becoming a born-again Christian at 19. He turned down an offer to play professional baseball and transferred from Lynchburg College to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri.

"My heart was burning to serve Christ," he once said in an interview. "I knew nothing would ever be the same again."

Falwell had made careful preparations for a transition of his leadership to his two sons, Jerry Falwell, Jr., now vice chancellor of Liberty University, and Jonathan Falwell, executive the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Falwell is survived by his wife, Macel, his two sons and a daughter, Jeannie Falwell Savas. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

Jerry Falwell was one of the very best Christian people I have ever had the priviledge of knowing and working with. He was an inspiration, total man of God, and excellent leader. He spoke the truth when the truth didn't want to be heard.

Dr. Falwell went out of his way to assist me in establishing and operating my Alabama based prison ministry and I shall always be grateful for his professional and prayerful support.

Dr. Falwell practiced what he preached and never failed to be available when needed. This man of God spoke when others, even fellow Christians, remained silent and was willing to face the consequences. A watered down, feel good religion was not his approach to preaching God's Word and I am thankful that I learned so much from him.

Jerry Falwell was as sure of heaven as he would be if he was already there. Now he is and all fellow believers shall, one day, meet him again.

God bless Dr. Falwell, his family, and those that knew and loved him as their friend and mentor.

As LU Alum who lived on campus the day of his passing... We miss Dr. Falwell. The school and TRBC are in good hands but the atmosphere is not the same after his untimely passing. My favorite memory is the first convo of each year when Dr. Falwell would addressed the student body for the first time. I can still hear those "JERRY" chants. See you when we get to heaven Dr. Falwell.

I remember sitting in the church when Pastor Falwell asked "who lost their keys" and when someone out in the middle replied that they did, he said, "coming at ya" or something like that and threw them to the man. He was a regular guy who had a heart for people.

Words cannot express how we felt when we heard that Dr. Falwell had gone to GLORY. Our son attended LU 1997 and married his sweetheart (who he met at LU) in 1998. Matthew had an opportunity to go to China while attending LU and it changed his life. Thank you for the impact that you had on his life. Mrs. Falwell, thank you for standing behind your sweetheart and praying for our son and others that were being taken care of while they were off at school. We look forward to saying "thank you in person one day". Love in Christ,

As a result of watching, Dr. Falwell on TV in the 70's. I got back in church, as a result my wife and I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ. Become a member of the Moral Majority and later my son attended Liberty. All as a result of Dr. Falwell. I just thank God for Dr. Falwell. And wanted to let you know how fortunate we were to have Jerry, and thank you to the Falwell Family for sharing Dr. Falwell with us and will miss him. But I know you folks will carry on the mission. Will keep you in our prayers.

To Macel, Jerry, Jr., Jeannie, Jonathan and families, I cannot begin to explain the sadness which gripped the hearts and minds of the faculty and staff when Jerry went home to be with our Lord; after all, many of us had worked with him for years--he had been my boss for 25 years--a quarter of a century!

I know that our Lord has a plan for LU and I have absolute confidence that Jerry, Jr. brings to the table his outstanding talents and will do a wonderful job in his own way.

Blessings to all of you as we continue to work together until we all go to be with our Lord and Jerry.

My family and I are praying for the Falwell family. Although I have only been a student with Liberty University for a short time and recently became more familiar with the life and ministry of the Falwell family; I am grateful for the work he and the Falwell family have accomplished. It's because of Liberty University's Distance Learning Program that I am able to receive my degree in a Godly environment. May God continue to bless the Falwell family and the many staff members that have been with them to see this ministry become all it is and will continue to become. God bless you - Keep the flame burning.

To the Falwell Family:

Dr. Falwell made a lasting impression on my life years ago. I was a young adult and corresponded with Dr. Falwell and even though I didn't talk to him personally, I received numerous prayer cards, material and family photos. There were always words of encouragement leading to the light at the end of the tunnel no matter how long the tunnel was or how dark. I am grateful that such a man walked the walk, talked the talk and did not hide his faith to save grace with anyone whether they be on some popular talk show or the president of the United States. Dr. Falwell did so much for the Lynchburg area and at the same time was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Falwell family,
Thank you for sharing your husband and father with us. He had such a higher calling that we all benefited from. As a student of LCA & Liberty from the age of 4, I am so thankful for his commitment to Christian education. We now are sending our girls to LCA and would have it no other way. We want our children to be a part of the vision of Dr Jerry Falwell. What a testimony he leaves behind with his sons leading the way now. Our prayers are with you all. Dr Falwell taught us that it is expected to lead by example and have faith. I think of him daily.

Eric and I are so proud to be God-Parents for the LGH. We have had the opportunity to place children in your arms to place in the waiting adoptive families arms. Without your vision for this wonderful program, we may have never met. We have been with LGH for 17 years now, and placed over 50 children through your ministry. Thank you, and God be with your family. I lost my father also, not to long ago. He was not famous to anyone but his family but it still hurt to let him go. He was a man of God, and viewed every visit from a nurse or hospice worker coming to the house as an opportunity to witness about the love of the Lord.
May God comfort you in your time of sorrow, but know that you will see him again. Love to all of the family.

My son graduated from Lynchburg Christian Academy and is attending Liberty University. Thank God for Dr. Falwell's deep committment to Jesus Christ and not being ashamed to stand for righteousnes. He truly has left a legacy not only in Lynchburg, but also impacted the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My heartfelt prayers are with your family. Dr. Jerry will be missed by all who knew and loved him. God used this man in ways that will never be known down here on this Earth. He was a true vessel of God's and that is what he would want to be known for...a servant of the King.
I attended Liberty from August, 1978 - May, 1983. I have many fond memories of the old "hotel" as a freshman, the mountain and the red mud, and the big tent where Christian Living class with Dr. Wemp was held a seven in the morning, regardless of the weather. I also remember traveling to DC for the "I Love America" rally on the steps of the Capitol, having the priviledge of hearing BR Lakin, John Rollins, EV Hill, Clebe McClary, Jack Wyrtzen, Tom McHarris, Francis Shaffer, and numerous other "greats" of God.
All of the various ministries, I was allowed to be a part of and grow in Knowledge...are just a speck of the impact that the life of Dr. Falwell has had on thousands of people because he was willing to be USED of GOD. We alumni must carry on the vision that God would not have any perish. Spread the Good News.
So family, thank you all for sharing your husband, father, and grandfather, with students such as I. My eyes are full of tears, but, we were truly blessed of God by having the priviledge of being a part of his ministry. He did fight a good fight!

Thank You Falwell Family,
Our precious grandson, Josh Denton was killed, after being hit by a car at 6:00 am on the morning of 10/24/05. Josh was on his way to a bible study he had started at a bagel shop in the San Diego area. He was given permission by the owner of the bagel shop to meet outside, but we all knew it wouldn't take long before the owner of the shop would say to the kids, "come on in." Josh's desire in life was to finish high school(07) and attend Liberty University. The day your precious husband, father and grandfather died we said, "Isn't it wonderful, Josh didn't have to go to Liberty, Liberty came to him.
We worked with Dr. Ken Connolly and Dr. Falwell at Brean Baptist Church in Orange Ca. and we take such comfort in the fact that Josh is sitting at the Savior's feet with Dr. Connolly and Dr. Falwell.
Thank you family for your unselfish love in sharing your loved one with us. We are Blessed.

It's hard to know what to write. I want the family to know they are in our prayers and we love them.
I want to thank them for sharing Jerry with us.
I have been a member of TRBC since I was around 6 and have worked for Jerry and the ministry for almost 20 yrs. I count it as an honor to have known him and am so blessed to have been a part of his vision. I heard him speak so often of how we as christians need to "finish well". He surley did!
So, as sad as we are that we no longer have him here with us, we know we will see him again. And what a celebration they have been having in Heaven...
Thank you again to the Falwell family - we are praying for you! And thank you to the Lord for giving him to us for a time!

I was saddened to learn of the death of my good friend Jerry Falwell; I am rejoicing though that he has been promoted to Glory! My cousin Sherry Peak represented me at the Funeral since I could not attend. I thank Jerry for the time he gave to me while riding in a car together in 2001 from Asheville NC to Greenville SC to the airport. He bestowed upon me great wisdom in helping to raise my family; his interest were in my 3 kids-not on himself or national politics. He was a man of great integrity and high moral values and he will be missed as we loose men like this with no replacements. God Bless him and I pray that the Lord continues to bless Macel and the Family. Bless Jonathon and Jerry Jr as they continue to lead Thomas Road Church and Liberty University now. You have always said on your program Jerry that Liberty University is your Legacy.....It certainly is and will be. God Bless!

My dad visited Thomas Rd Baptist Church in 1984. I have a picture of him standing by the brick sign by the road. I sent that picture to my nephew when he enrolled in Liberty 3 years ago. My dad and mom would be thrilled that he attended Liberty.

Likewise, I had the privilege of coming to graduation last week to watch my nephew graduate. I was awed by the tremendous love that the whole community of Lynchburg has for Dr. Falwell. I continue to keep my four days of being at Liberty in my mind, me awed by Dr. Falwell's work and kindness, deeply saddened by his death.

I am sad, especially for you the family who has lost him; this is a huge loss and a huge adjustment.

I want you to know that I care about all of you: the family, of course, the church, the university, and the great town of Lynchburg.

Dr. Falwell's resting place is divine; probably as divine as the beauty of Mr. Billingsly singing the Lord's Prayer over Dr. Falwell's casket on that beautiful mountain on that beautiful but sorrowful last day.

I send my best to you as I think about and feel some of your grief, and yet, know that Dr. Falwell is way better off than any of us here left to grieve, knowing that he is just so touched to be with his Lord.

You take care of yourselves and take it very slowly through these next months as you miss this wonderful man....

Sincerely,
Marleen Crockett (St. Petersburg, Fl)

Thank you for always taking a stand even when it was difficult and unpopular. May God give your family peace in this hard time. We love you.

Our family will miss Jerry so much. We looked forward to seeing and speaking with him at each Living Christmas Tree. In 2005, he shared a moment with us at the TRBC Gazebo and took a "family" picture with us. We will never forget that and will always cherish that. I am a Liberty graduate from 1992, my brother 1980, and my father-in-law, a pastor from the first graduating class. We all have such fond memories of him and appreciate all he stood for.

Dear Falwell Family and Friends,

I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy in the passing of Dr. Falwell. I praise God for him and the big impact he had on my life. He greatly influenced me, especially during my years at Liberty U. I will always remember him as a man who was faithful and as a man with great vision. May I finish the race the Lord has planned for me the same way he did...faithful.

I would like to let the Falwell Family know that I grew up at TRBC and my children attend also. My mother Helen Barbour Austin started at the first church Jerry had. She has passed also and will be so happy to see Jerry again, she loved and always praised his word of God. I would like the family to know that I'm so very sorry for the loss and that he will always be missed but never forgotten. God bless you all!

Jerry Falwell will be missed by countless number of people who loved his passion for making a strong and confident stand for Gods Word. He spoke for many , many Christians who wholeheartedly agree with the truths he preached. He was a fine man and although I only saw him in person 2 times, I feel I have known him for a long time . Only in Heaven , can we know the full impact of his ministry as a pastor, evangelist and one speaks the truth when it is unpopular to do so.He spoke the truth in love , always proclaiming Jesus as the answer for sin.To his widow, children and the rest of his family, thank you for sharing Dr Jerry Falwell with us. God bless you .

To Family & Friends of Dr. Jerry Falwell:
Several weeks ago Liberty University hosted the 50th annual Lynchburg appearance of Cole Bros. Circus. As Rev. Falwell assumed the role of Honorary Ringmaster at one of the performances, I had the opportunity to meet him. I was so impressed by him as a fun-loving and genuinely nice person, taking time to greet people or have his photo taken. It was wonderful seeing three generations of the Falwell Family enjoying each other and their time together. On behalf of the staff and artists of Cole Bros. Circus, our Circus Family, we sincerely express our sympathy and appreciate the loss of the Falwell Family. I hope your memories of an afternoon together at the Circus and the happy family times you spent will outweigh the sorrow of your loss. May God richly bless you all until we see you next year.

I just want to say what a great man of God Jerry was I grew up at Thomas Road. Was saved in 1972 at age 14 at a service with Bob Herrington and later baptisted by Jerry, I now live in Florida but come to Lynchburg every summer for the 4th of July on the mountain as my family still lives in Lynchburg. I will miss seeing Jerry there he was a world wide seed planter for our Lord Jesus Christ. My thoughts and prayer are with the Falwell Family.

Next to my parents, Jerry was the greatest influence in my decision to lead children on a FT basis. He placed the right leaders in their places at the perfect time to teach and lead me at LBC to become a II Timothy 2:2 believer. It has been like losing another father, a spiritual father.

I fully believe that he has trained, with God's amazing power and grace, thousands of Elishas. The challenge is now for we alumni, and anyone who fell under his ministry at all to rise cross this Jordan, take up the mantle, and continue the work he left for us to do. A world is begging for an answer. It is hungry for something to fill the hole-the God-shaped vacuum everyone tries to fill. We TRBC,LHBI, OTGH, MM, BELIEVERS OF JESUS CHRIST, LBC, & LU alumni have the answer. Let's show the love of the One who has sent us, Jesus First and by example, our leader, Jerry, Sr.

To the family, you are the most qualified and capable to carry on his ministry. Lead us and we will follow as you follow Christ. My prayer is for you.

My family and I could never repay Jerry for all he did for us. I attended TRBC back in the 1960's and I remember when he started the church in the Dr. Pepper warehouse. He married me and my first wife in 1960 and he preached her funeral in 1966. Forty one years later my wife and I enjoyed so much watching The Old Time Gospel Hour while we dressed for church on Sunday mornings. Our prayers are with each member of the family and may God continue to bless them and may God continue to bless TRBC and Liberty University.

We were so sad to hear of Rev. Falwell's homegoing. He was a great force for the Kingdom of God. It is a sad time when one of our great leaders in Christ is taken from us. Our daughter graduated from Liberty and we enjoyed our visits. May you take comfort in knowing he is with his Father and you will meet again. Our loss is Heaven's gain!

Early one morning, in June 1989, I called Dr. Falwell's home number to request a short quote to use at my husband's Memorial service. Rev. Joe Uhrig was a pioneer in religious television in Washington, DC in the 50's, was impressed with Jerry Falwell's zeal and potential for the Kingdom, and urged him to use television when Jerry was still in the storefront and coaxial cable was used. Jerry gave public appreciation and recognition to Joe for his encouragement. I'm sure they've been reminising for several days now. Praise the Lord. Doris Uhrig

Our condolences to the Falwell Family. Before leaving Lynchburg to return to Atlanta, it was a privilege to be a member of TRBC for 4 years. We loved Dr. Falwell and will miss being able to turn on the TV and feeling as though we never left the ministry be being able to hear his teachings, words of wisdom, and certainly...his wonderful sense of humor.

My prayers go out to the Falwell family, and the Liberty community. I remember coming to the University several years ago to bring my mom and grandmother to see a Christian comedian. I stood in amazement at the huge church, and felt honored to be there in such an awesome house of God! I will never forget the multitude of times my grandmother sat and watched the Old Time Gospel Hour. You will be missed Dr. Falwell.

Dr. Falwell gave me the wonderful opportunity to attend Liberty on scholarship. I was an El. Ed major and now serve with my husband and our (soon to be) 6 children on the mission field where I homeschool our kids. I will forever be thankful for the education he personally allowed me to recieve at Liberty. We are being blessed today as a family in our ministry and schooling because of it. Thank you for sharing your Dad and husband so freely. Meeting him via Jack Wyrtzen was a memory I will always cherish. We praise the Lord for Dr. Falwell's legacy.

We were students of Liberty University back in 1994-97. We were very excited to be part of Dr. Falwell's vision and wonderful school. So we would like to thank Dr. Falwell for being an inspiration in our lives from school but also living for Christ. We will be praying for the family in this time of loss and know that we will miss Dr. Falwell also.

About ten years ago, Dr. Falwell took a chance on me -- a young, inexperienced fresh-out-of-college graduate from Kentucky -- and gave me the opportunity to grow professionally and spiritually. I am forever grateful for the potential he saw in me and for the years that I was able to work with him. Falwell family, thank you for sharing him with me. Please know that you are continually in my thoughts and prayers now and in the days, weeks and months that lie ahead.

God truly performed a great work in the life of the late Jerry Falwell. We have been blessed to be benefactors of his surrender to God's will in his life. We attend Liberty University's distance learning program. Truly,"He(being God) which hath begun a good work in Jerry Falwell's life has performed it..." We thank God for allowing us to take part in the great work for the cause of Christ that Jerry Falwell has been instrumental through God's leadership in starting. Our sympathies go to the Falwell family for their loss. We share their grief and are comfortd that as fellow believers in Christ that we may weep, but not as those without hope. Looking forward to meeting Mr. Falwell in heaven one day!

Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to Macel and the children, spouses, and grandchildren and all the members of TRBC and Liberty students. Dr. Falwell was an amazing man who was bigger than life. His leadership has truly left a big impact on our world today and he did it all as a humble shepherd of the Lord. Thank God for Jerry Fallwell! It was an honor to get my degree there ('94) one year after our daughter ('93). We go to the early service and Sunday School here in Florida so we can rush home and get the service live on Sky Angel. We will miss him on Sunday and will be watching and praying for Jonathan as he leads the church. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My heart is broken for the Falwell family. A great man of God has been taken. With 3 children presently attending LU, I pray they will continue the legacy that Dr. Falwell established of standing for principle, living out the word of God and doing all through love. Dr. Falwell will greatly be missed. . .heaven's gain.
