Forgive this tardy thought in condolence of fond memories of Gene from decades ago. When I was a fresh lawyer in the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department, Gene was the defense counsel for the Idaho First National Bank in an anti-merger case being tried in Boise. (The Bank won.)
My memories are pleasing, because Gene was an excellent model of highly intelligent and very able lawyer. Good example for a young lawyer to have as a lasting model leaving lasting instructive impression.
In addition to his outstanding professional abilities, his social repartee was always delightfully on point, in contrast to his rigorous professional demeanor. I always recall when someone asked in passing conversation, if I liked San Francisco, and without a moments hesitation Gene interjected, "Like? His soul abides there." Albeit, I didn't reside there then, some years later I did for many years. But, not for the past 8 years. (I am now in Sedona, Az.)
I have not any recollection, what brought Gene to my octogenarian mind this day. But, I am happy to have had it to relish the recollections on this Octave of All Souls Day. I shall pray for Gene's great and kind soul.
