YANCEY, Claire

Claire Johnson Yancey passed away on May 6, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born May 1, 1923 in Charlotte, NC to Iva Terrell Johnson and John Dennis Johnson. She grew up in Atlanta, graduated from Washington Seminary, and attended Agnes Scott College. In 1941, she married B. She was also predeceased by her son, Jon Harris Yancey; her brother, John Dennis Johnson, Jr.; and her sister, Ellender J. Jones. She is survived by four children, B. Earle Yancey, III, (Lynne), Claire Y. Benedict (S. Bryan), Denise Y. Proffitt (Jim), and Lula Jack Y. Bredeman (Steve); and by six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two nieces, who all loved her dearly. I was sorry to hear about Mrs. Yancey´s death. I grew up with her children and always thought Mrs. Yancey was just such a lovely humble lady. I am glad she had such a long life and wonderful life, and will be thinking of the family at this sad time.

Dear Earle, Claire, Denise, and Lula Jack,
An era has ended: what a SWEET, wonderful, and elegant lady your lovely Mom was! I had such fond memories growing up on Arden Road as your "backdoor neighbor" and playing with Jack at your cozy Castlewood home. Unfortunately, I didn´t run into Mrs. Yancey very often after those days, but it certainly was a pleasure when I did. She was always SO regal, gracious, and genuine - a true "Steel Magnolia" in the best sense of the phrase. I am so sorry to learn that she has passed away, but happy to know that you were lucky enough to have had her for so many years. And now, after all this time, she is joyfully reunited with your delightful Dad. What a great story and beautiful family they had! May God bless your parents and all of you at this bittersweet juncture.
I extend my sincerest condolences and love and will be keeping you in my warmest thoughts and prayers in the days and months ahead.
