Just found out Ms. Thomas passed yesterday at a PTO meeting for my son at Oakridge. Ms. Thomas was my teacher when I was a little girl for two years and she changed my life forever. She believed in me and as I'm typing I still get a little choked up because this lady had a passion for teaching children and helping children learn to read and do math....she had a unique style of teaching that has embraced children who had the chance to be in her class.... In my adult like my son got the opportunity to have her during a summer program at Oakridge two years ago and it made a difference in his life. I will really Miss Ms. Bestsy Thomas and I am grateful to her and how she changed my life....it teachers like her that can make children succeed in life and look back and always remember it was because of them that advantage their success in life..... My prayers go out to her family and I will leave this by writing one of the songs she Ms. Thomas loved to sing on play. You are my sunshine my only sunshine you make me happy when skies are gray....I want to tell you how much I love you....please don't take my sunshine away......

I had the great honor of having Ms. Thomas as my 2nd grade back in 1992-93. That year was expeacally trying because I spent most most of the year in the hospital with a brain tumor. Ms. Thomas would visit whenever she got the chance, which was one of the only thing that brought a smile to my face. It was the only time I was mad I missed school. Her stories and encuragment convinced me to look for something to do in life that I enjoyed. Though her death makes the world seem a little dimmer to all that knew her, we can all take confert that shes watching over us from heaven. God bless Ms. Thomas.

I had the great honor of being Betsy's principal for 7 years. She was one of the most gifted teachers I've ever seen. She was highly creative yet highly organized also.Betsy had great compassion and a big heart for others. She was highly personable and enjoyed telling and hearing a good joke.Honesty, loyalty and being a giver were major qualities of hers.Even though our careers took us on different paths,I always felt her presence and friendship. The world has lost a great person and a fabulous teacher.God bless you for all the good you did for all of us fortunate to know you!

I had the privilege of working with Betsy at Oak Ridge from 1996-2000. She was always warm, kind, caring and someone to go to for support, ideas, or just a hug. She was an amazing lady who touched a lot of lives and won't be forgotten soon.

Ms. Thomas was one of the best teachers I had. It was a pleasure to have her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. I'll never forget her warm smile, hugs, and of course all the songs she sang for us during break time. She gave us so much and treated us as her own. I'm thankful that she never forgot me and I thank GOD for placing such a wonderful person in my life to help me become a successful student and person overall!

My condolences to Betsy's family. My prayers for understanding as well as God's Blessings are only small portion of what I ask for your family.
Betsy was a very caring and giving individual. I will always remember her smile that she always showed when giving. I feel it was a joy for her to give to others.
She always made special gifts for my children at Christmas time. We have always and will continue to place these special ornaments on our tree each passing year.
Her smiling face will always be remembered within our famiy, not just during this special time of the year, but whenever we think of her.
Thank you Betsy for the warmth that you always showed with that wonderful smile.

I feel so very lucky to have had my "Momma 2". As the mother of her Grandchildren, I couldn't have survived their births and subsequent years without her, and do not know how to do so now. She listened whenever I had a problem, and always made me feel better. She helped me raise my children, and taught them so very much, as she did thousands of other children who were lucky enough to have her as a teacher. She scolded me when I needed to be scolded, comforted me when I needed shoulder, and always put everyone before herself. I will miss our conversations, our dinners, our shopping excursions (which, if you knew Betsy, were very long days indeed), our Holidays, and every other day in between. Though I wish I had many more years with her, I thank God she didn't suffer long. Her son, our children, myself, her brother and his family, her "second" family (aka all you wonderful women out there who know who you are) will keep her memory alive and our lives were made so much better for having her.

Ms. Betsy was one of the greatest people I have ever met thus far in life. From the first day I had the honor of meeting her, I felt right at home and felt like a part of her family. From talking to her personally, and hearing stories from those she had met or those who knew her best (including her family), I had such a respect for an amazing woman. She was able to put a smile on everyone's face and sometimes I felt she could tell it like it was. There are several moments of her that I will always cherish, and that I was extremely blessed to have witnessed. Her grand-son Jayson's birthday celebration out on "Papi and Sams' farm. That day was one of my favorites, watching her talk with everyone and reminisce. Watching her help Julia get dressed in her 'princess' attire. Her grand-daughter Julia's dance recital celebration at Applebee's, where she was glad to be amongst family and friends celebrating the occassion. The time that we visited Betsy at her welcoming home, and took Smudgie (her absolutely precious puppy) into our arms to care for him. She had such a love for animals and family/friends, I was always amazed. I always wanted to ask her plenty of questions, but never had to because she told the best stories. Seeing her spend time with 'daughter'/friend Kristina, made me so happy to see them share so much in common and how they loved each other so. I always admired their outlook on life. Betsy was such a positive person and influence! I had always hoped that she would be arround incase of a future wedding (mine), because oh would she have been so happy that day celebrating with everyone! But I find comfort in the fact that Betsy/Grandma Betsy is now an angel amongst the others in heaven, and I take comfort knowing that God has her watched over. We love and miss you Ms.Betsy!

You never forget your Kindergarten teacher. Ms. Thomas never forgot me either. I have bumped into her several times during the past ten years or so, and she always called me by name. She made such an impression on me. I'll always remember her playing the harp, all of us sitting "indian-style" and singing "This Land is Your Land" at Oak Ridge. She was the perfect example of what a teacher should be - so patient and kind. What a tremendous loss for those she left behind and a tremendous gain for the angels above, who have the pleasure of her company now.

Betsy was one of the kindest and loving people I(my family) have ever had the priviledge of knowing. She was a friend of my family's for many years and was there for us during our many tragedies. I am so sorry I had lost contact with her over the past few years and it was a terrible shock to hear of her passing. She will be missed and remembered fondly. Our deepest sympathies to Tyler and his family.

My smypathy to the Thomas family. I had the privilege of having Ms. Thomas as my kindergarten teacher in 1982-83. I remember her playing the auto harp and singing along to songs I still remember today. Thank you Ms. Thomas for being such an inspiration in my life and one of the best teachers I have ever known. I will never forget you.

My sympathy to the Thomas family. I had the fortune to have Ms. Thomas for Kindergarten in 1977-78. She made learning so much fun and I will never forget the songs we learned and sang as we sat "Indian style" in the middle of the quad at Oak Ridge. Life did not treat everyone kind in the future. Some of us grew up and did some things we should not have but not because of Ms. Thomas. Those same future adults that may even have grown up and spent time in jail; smiled, laughed and sang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Ms. Thomas. I say this because some of her students did not come from the greatest environments but we all received one of the greatest educations you can receive from anyone. She made us all feel special. When I graduated from Rickards High in 1990 a smile spread across my face when I saw Ms. Thomas at our graduation. I think some of that love for giving back was contagious because I am entering my 13th year as an educator this August. The ways in which I have touched my students is simply continuing what Ms. Thomas started in 1977. As long as those we have touched continue to touch the lives of others, we never truly leave this world. Thanks again, Ms. Thomas.

Betsy Thomas was like a second Mother to me when I was a kid. She and my Mother were best friends as was my brother and her son. In fact 25 years later they still are. I spent a lot of time with Betsy and she always treated me like her own. To me she was so different than anyone I had ever met, which I always admired and strived to be just like. She inspired uniqueness and I attribute my uniqueness to her. She loved animals and I believe I got my love for them from her. I loved her so as a child, one of the most influential people in my life. Will miss you and will always love you Betsy.

I will never forget the first time I met Betsy. Having just moved to Tallahassee, I was interviewing at one of those horrid job fares. Her table was the first interview and it went well. But I went on to my other interviews, only to find Betsy behind me and following me each time. With that huge, warm smile she kept asking me back. I just felt compelled. A light always emanated from her. She had such goodness. We are all better people for having known her. Keep smiling down on us, Betsy!
