CSM Wilson, you were my Drill Instructor at Fort Benning in 1983. You taught me so much. You had a way of motivating without humiliating, which is rare among Drill Instructors. You called me "little big man" and encouraged me about my assignment (after basic and infantry training) with th 1/75 ranger Battalion. You told me to "go take the test and be the best." Thank you CSM. RIP

CSM, I first met you when you were a platoon leader in Panama and I was a green 2LT. It is because of NCOs like you that any officer is successful in the military. I last saw you at Ft. Campbell just before you deployed. Your smile and firm handshake will always be with me. You are a friend and a mentor. On this Memorial Day I wanted to raise a glass to you and say thank you. May the Lord bless and keep your family always. I know you are keeping watch over all of us.

I met CSM Wilson as a Drill Sergeant at Harmony Church in 1983 at Fort Banning, GA.
We later crossed paths in Panama and down range in Iraq.
CSM Jerry Wilson was a True Leader you never Forgot, WE also lost CSM Donovan Watts from the 82d around this time period and so many countless other great Warriors in OIF and OEF.
May God look over the Wilson family all the days of our life. We will never forget our Drill Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major and Friend.

It is during Holidays like today that I slow down enough to pause and think about GREAT AMERICANS like you CSM Wilson. I remember you as one of my most influential Drill Sergeants. May your family always know you are forever in our hearts and minds. God Bless!

As another Thanksgiving season approaches I continue to remember your service and sacrifice. We here at Fort Campbell just had our run for the fallen event. A single boot for every service member loss since the wars on terror started was placed in front of the Headquarters Building. It was a very moving tribute to each service member. A boot was displayed with your name on. Seeing your boot along with the thousands of other boots was a moving and emotional event. You touched so many lives. Your counseling, leadership and mentorship allowed soldiers to move up in the ranks and become great leaders. It wouldn't surprise me you're probably still taking care of those soldiers who have returned to their final home in Heaven! I will never forget you CSM. Rest in peace my friend. I look forward to the day when we meet again.

It's been awhile since we have seen each other. You were a great mentor to me and a true leader of men. When I received word that day we rushed to the area and as I looked around I seen what had happened and our young Soldiers were in disbelief that you were taken from us.

I will always remember our talks, your guidance, leadership and understanding.

To the Wilson family and friends: Prayers from my family and myself go out to you all. Sgt. Maj. Wilson was a man I will never forget. He made such a great impact on so many of his soldiers and was held at the highest regard by all. I never saw another leader show so much genuine concern for his soldiers. He knew us all by our first name and always took the time out of his day to stop, check-in, and just say hello. What a great man he was. You will be missed CSM Wilson. Gone but not forgotten.

Another year has passed and the hurt of not having my father-in-law physically seems to never subside. Reading posts from those who faithfully remembers him on his passing anniversary is uplifting. Since my last post CSM has 3 additional grand kids, all boys! My husband and I were blessed with a boy and my brother-in-law has two sons. We are proud to say CSM has a total of 6 grandchildren. Thank you for remembering CSM service to our country. Cherish your love ones for I wonder often how differently my kids life would be if they knew there Papa Jerry. :(

CSM Wilson you are missed so very much. You were like a father figure to me and I really appreciate that. I never got to tell when we were in Iraq that I was pregnant because like a father I knew you would've been disappointed. I thought I would wait until we all returned to Campbell to tell you but I never got a chance. Everything worked out for me. I'm married now with two children, a house, a government job, and a small business. You would've been proud. You will never be forgotten.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As another Memorial Day weekend approaches I wish to remember a great Soldier and even more so a wonderful human being. As I read through all of these wonderful entries, it's very clear he touched many lives in such a positive manner. While his time with us was very short, his legacy will last a lifetime in those who knew and loved him. It gives us some comfort knowing that when a soldier dies and arrives at the gates of Heaven, perhaps CSM Wilson is one of those individuals who will be there to greet them and show them the way. I sure hope so!
You may be gone but you will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace my friend.

CSM Wilson was my drill sgt at D 4/2 Ft Benning Ga. back in 1984, He was the first Ranger I encountered in the Army. Very quiet, professional, and competent man. He inspired me to be all I could be. Many years later I was assigned to Fairbanks, AK. I bumped into him again when I was stationed there from 94-96. We both looked at each other and he said as he glanced at my left shoulder,"How you doing Ranger? You've done grown up a bit". With a big smile I said it was great to see him after 11-12 yrs. Some, like CSM Wilson inspire others. He certainly motivated me to serve 22yrs in the Army. He is a true hero, a mentor, and a Great American. I ride my motor cycle out to the Vets Cemetery and I stop by the memorial there and say a prayer for you and your family, that they are all doing well and in Gods Grace. CSM Jerry L. Wilson, you may be gone but, RANGER! You will never be forgotton.

Command Sgt. Maj. Wilson,

Thank you for being such a great example of what a leader should be. Since childhood, I always wanted to learn the soldier's way. I feel blessed that God picked you to teach me. As the CSU Ranger Team Instructor, you taught me to always strive for the best regardless of circumstances. You are the difference that made a dull life experience into the extraordinary.

I will never forget you CSM Wilson.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jerry, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Oh my God NO is all I could say when I decided to do a google search on CSM Jerry L. Wilson. I met CSM Wilson while working as the DCSM secretary at 101 Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY. CSM was a kind man who would do anything for his soldiers. He would always encourage me to strive for more. I was never lucky enough to serve under him, but everytime he came into the DCSM office he would have something encouraging or something funny to say. He always talked about his sons. My heart goes out to his family. He made a positive and lasting impact on everyone who came in contact with him. He will surely be missed. After all this time I still think of him so you know he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace CSM Jerry Lee Wilson!

I too served with CSM Jerry Wilson as my Battalion CSM while assigned to 2/1st Infantry in Alaska and deployed with him to Egypt during that time. CSM Wilson was definitely not your typical loud, bolsterous CSM, but he had a way about him to let you know what he expected of you, without having to raise his voice. If you did something to disappoint him or upset him, you knew it without him having to even say a word. I am no longer in the Infantry, but I attribute every value in my being to the great leaders I had during that time...and CSM Wilson was a big part of that. When I heard he was taken from us, my heart sank into my stomach and I could not believe that such a good man was gone. My heart truly goes out to his family and please know that CSM Wilson has touched so many of us that he will definitely be remembered for a long time to come.

"I had the honor to serve with CSM Wilson (then SSG Wilson) in 1982 in Dahlonega Ga, I was a very young and mixed up soldier. Jerry took a special interest in me and turned my life around. He showed me the right way to do things and he showed how to take charge of my life in so many ways. When I would mess up he would say " MO, whats wrong with you boy" I will never forget what Jerry did for me. After learning of his death I renlisted after being out for 16 years and went to Iraq. I felt it was the right thing to do. I would like for CSM Wilsons loved ones to know what an impact he had and to this day still has on my life. I will always be in debt to Jerry for being my friend and leader."

CSM Wilson was the perfect example of what an NCO should be. He mentored soldiers and NCO's equally. He was always a "reachable" individual. He never held his rank above you, unless you deserved to, and made you feel at ease.
The Army needs more senior NCO's like him. It is the Army's loss. It's too bad that more CSM's aren't carved out of his mold.
He is sorely missed in the NCO Corps.
Save us a spot in that formation in the sky, Sergeant Major. We'll fall in at once.

I had the priveledge of serving as one of CSM Wilsons Platoon Sergeants from 1997-2000 at Fort Wainwright,Alaska. I came to respect and love this man for the great leader he truely was. I will never forget seeing the evening news on 23 November 2003. I called my wife to the television to see as the television announced a story on CSM Wilson, I was utterly devistated and crushed to see it was about his death. As a soldier at the time at Fort Benning, Georgia it ws my goal from that very moment to come to Iraq to fight in his honor. I have been to Mosul since and met many of the people and soldiers where he died, I can only hope that someday the people of our country and those of Iraq realize what a great man we lost that day. CSM Wilson made a difference in my life and has given me many memories I will cherish forever. My deepest sympathys to his family, everyone I know from 2/1 Infantry loved CSM Wilson deeply.

CSM Wilson was my Head Drill Instructor at CSU ROTC. I saw him again at Northern Artic Warfare School in Alaska some years later. He was and will always be a soldier’s solider, an Airborne Ranger All the Way and then some! My deepest sympathies go out to his family. He will be missed and always remembered.

To the Wilson Family,
CSM Wilson was a true professional and an inspiration for every Soldier that he encountered. Although we never crossed paths during our military careers, I deeply respected him for all that he accomplished in the Army. He will be forever missed and remembered as an exemplary leader, mentor and NCO. May God Bless and keep you always.

I had the pleasure of serving under CSM Wilson. Myself, like alot of the other soldiers, saw him as a friend and mentor as well as a great leader. We all remember the weekends in the barracks BBQing with him there. He never lorded his rank over us and always treated us as equals. CSM Wilson will be in many of our hearts for the rest of our lives.

CSM Wilson was an inspiration to me. He was the first NCO that I saluted as an Officer. He was "hard as woodpecker lips." My deepest condolences go out to his family. To quote him, "I will God Dag miss him!"

Your lessons on leadership will be truly missed. Both my wife and I owe much of our military success to your training. You were an inspiration to all of the cadets at Central State. You were tough but fair and accepted nothing less than our best effort at all times. For that we are extremely grateful. I am proud to have known you and to have received my very first salute from such a professional soldier. Rest in Peace.

CSM Wilson was my instructor at Central State University from 1990-1994. I will never forget the lessons he taught me about leadership and what good leaders are expected to do. His loss rippled across the students he trained throughout the military and even now we sorely miss him. God bless you CSM Wilson.

Wow, what can I say...A soldier's soldier, a gentle, free-willed spirit, all wrapped up into a gladiator of a man. CSM Wilson often came by my supply office while in Iraq (Mosul) and got items from me that others couldn't. It was funny when he came by he literally would go shopping in my office. I also had the privilege of sitting down and talking with him the morning before he died, it was definately a heart to heart and something to cherish as long as I live. May the peace of God that passes all understanding guard our hearts in mind through Christ Jesus. Fly on Warrior, Fly on.

IT'S BEEN ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO SINCE WE LOST YOU. EVENTHOUGH I DID NOT WORK FOR YOU DIRECTLY, I FELT LIKE I DID. EVENTHOUGH YOU WERE IN 2D BCT AND I WAS IN DISCOM, EVERYTIME YOU CAME TO THE AIRFIELD IN MOSUL YOU MADE IT A POINT TO CHECK ON ALL OF YOUR "DISCOM" FAMILY. YOU WERE OUR SECOND CSM. WHEN CSM VINNING WENT HOME FOR MEDICAL REASON, YOU MADE SURE WE WERE BEING TAKEN CARE OF. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU ASKING ME WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME I HAD SEEN MY HUSBAND. THANK YOU FOR BEING A SOLDIER'S CSM AND LETTING US SUPPORT SOLDIERS KNOW THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER ABOUT MOS THAT WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. YOU ARE MISSED. THANK YOU SSG DALPHNIE TERRELL

My God, what a man, citizen and soldier of the United States. We will never know what his fate would have been if Iraq had not consumed him, but I would find it hard to imagine an end that would have found him doing anything he loved more or that was more important to the many lives he was undoubtedly responsible for molding and saving - or to the citizens of the country he served and the furture democracies that may yet come from the lost lives of men like this.

Sorry, that you had to die at such an young age, and did not get to enjoy the benefits of becoming older with family and friends. I hope that all of our troops will be home soon, and will not suffer the ultimate prize for the Freedom in Iraq as you.
